Hello All,

I am soon getting my R1S delivery but I wanted to get thoughts on underbody cover/protection. I don't have it added and won't be doing any rock crawling or major adventurous things but I live in Michigan with lot of snow. Should I have it added or do you all think that I should be fine without it.

Thank you in advance!!

I would rather not have it if I didn't need it. Having it could create a place for moisture to gather and speed under body corrosion. Its weight also reduces the vehicle payload by about 150#. This could be significant if you tow a trailer with a heavy tongue weight. Not to mention the extra cost.

The included underbody protection will be more than adequate. If you have no plans to go rock crawling or more advanced off roading, I wouldn't bother.

I have the reinforced underbody shield on my R1S, but that is because I do intend to use it offroad. The vehicle does have shielding on the underside normally, but it is just not as substantial as the reinforced shield. Snow is not an issue at all for the vehicle with the normal shielding; so if you do not plan to use it offroad then you don't need the reinforced shielding.

Agree with others the base protection is already better than what you get with any other EV that I'm aware of. If you think you might go buck wild off road or possibly increase resale value really no need for it.

If your off-roading consists of deep uneven ruts, big rocks and high chance of bottoming, yes add it. Otherwise, you don't need it, unless you think it could be an appealing selling point when it's time to sell.

I do actually off road frequently, and even with that, I was 50/50. Opted for it, but I probably would have been fine without. For anyone who isn't a frequent off-roader, it's very overkill .

I added it to my R1T as I didn't know if I would ever take it off road or not, after a year of ownership I have taken it on a dirt road once or twice but still glad I have it just in case and maybe good for resale.

Yes.

Total hearsay and speculation, YMMV, but my experience says RUS makes for a quieter ride.

It’s not just screwed in place but welded and not possible to add after the vehicle has been built.

you’ll drop more than $2,000 modding your vehicle during your ownership.

I’ve been under both vehicles with and without the plate. The one without a plate was a joke. I could bang and flex the panels with my hand. The one with the shield was solid and you couldn’t flex it. Punch it and bang it with your hand all you want and bust your knuckles on the bash plate.

Bash plate 100% off the time especially if no aftermarket solutions exist and the current solution is better than what’s usually available.

You can bet your ass I’ll be pricing and looking for someone who appreciates the bash plate when it’s time for me to sell in the future.

Good luck finding a late model June 2023 launch edition with ocean coast seats, not white, green or silver paint and has an underbody shield. Those builds will be rare and command a premium.

It’s basic supply and demand .

Among the potential off road use and maybe resale for an adventure vehicle, this was another reason I added. Others noted anecdotally that the ride seemed quieter when compared to non RUS. I’ve only driven in trucks with, so not sure myself.
