Rivian Trip Planner planning problems

I'm trying to use the Rivian trip planner in the app to figure out whether a trip is feasible with my Gen 2 R1S. Before you dismiss my concerns, note that this trip will include 160 miles off road total (out and back), and between the start and end point there's realistically one charging option. The trip is 152 miles one way, 305 miles total (which is beyond my 290 mile range), and should take ~6 hours according to Google maps (3 hours out and 3 hours back). However, both the Rivian planner and ABRP (with a starting charge of 100%) calculate a trip of about 15 hours that's routed through Arizona to the south rim of the Grand Canyon for some reason.

Here's the Google Maps route, which is reasonable, though doesn't include a charging stop i Kanab of course.

Compare this with the ABRP plan (which is similar to the Rivian plan). I just assumed a 10% arrival charge. There's a supercharger in Kanab - even though that's a bit off my route I'd normally plan to use. it. But ABRP has other ideas...

The Rivian trip planner makes a similar 'guess'. The point marked at 9% is the intended destination, and even with the slight detour to Kanab (the 30 minute charge) I'm then taken to Page, then the south rim of the Grand Canyon, then, a loop back to the north rim destination. Given the failure of the route planners, I'm instead having to do the math to calculate a stop on in Kanab on the way out and back (Kanab supercharger to Point Sublime is 75 miles each way, so assuming charge to 80%+ (!230 miles) in Kanab I expect to be fine.

I've tried a bunch of different options for arrival state of charge, planning one way and round trip etc., and I can't get the Rivian planner to give me the simple option. Thoughts from my fellow road trippers would be appreciated, as this is the kind of trip I do most often. Is there a trick I'm missing here? My theory is that the planners won't allow me to spend enough time at the supercharger in Kanab to get me the additional range.

Update - I've been able to get ABRP to figure out the optimal route (via the website, but not via the app ;(, but the Rivian app with the same trip setup is still routing me into Arizona via Page and ultimately a 1044 mile trip (a route that looks similar to the ABRP one above).

Must have something to do with your settings in ABRP. On my phone using ABRP for this route I got almost the same as your Google map with Kanab charging added. Looks like you should have no issue with charging. I have not used Kanab, but its pretty new.

Route planning on the RIvian can be more challenging. I just let it plan what it wants to. I then edit to add and remove charging stops and other points to force the route I want. I set my own charging stops for two reasons. 1) planner does not consider cost 2) I try to plan lunch with a longer stop.

You have to keep in mind that the Rivian trip planner works on only a subset of charging networks. If it needs to find you a charger, it can route you far out of the way to get you to a charger from one of it's known networks

That doesn't work too well in that area because few chargers, and they're not all in one of the approved networks.

I have made that trip with my Gen 1 R1T. I charged overnight at a North Rim campground. That was before the fire.

I highly recommend using ABRP because it will use all networked and non-networked chargers, and you can account for overnight charging easily. Rivian's planner doesn't have the tools you need to plan multi-day trips. It may take a while to figure out all the ABRP settings...

For something this tight I would use ABRP.

I highly recommend using ABRP because it will use all networked and non-networked chargers, and you can account for overnight charging easily. Rivian's planner doesn't have the tools you need to plan multi-day trips. It may take a while to figure out all the ABRP settings...

You can't tell it to use all networks/ports like in google maps planner ?

No, it's not that Rivian has no idea where the chargers are - after all Rivian owns ABRP so they clearly have all the data.

It's that Rivian will only use networks inside the vehicle if the network provides live public availability and pricing data. Rivian doesn't want to send you to a non-functional charger in the middle of nowhere.

The list of networks used in-vehicle has grown and will continue to grow, but it will always be a subset of all chargers.

So it should be the same as google planner/maps ? They have all ev chargers data

Only the ones that have an API that allows Rivian to see the data @VSG mentioned. Not all of the charging networks out there do that.

Maybe they’ll start using Google’s data now that they’ve moved to Google Maps. There isn’t much reason to get it from other sources anymore, I guess. I believe they mainly needed the ABRP startup for their in-house navigation.
