Exclusive: Rivian to acquire ABRP (A Better Route Planner)

The deal could close in as a week – or it might have been completed as this goes to print.

Sources tell Electrek that Rivian has been in talks to acquire the world’s most popular EV route planning service, Sweden-based A Better Route Planner, or ABRP for short. Financial details weren’t disclosed, but ABRP is a wholly owned subsidiary of Iternio, which lists a small employee count of under 10 people and 8 people on LinkedIn.

Old news with no proof. Sources say but they won't name their source. Rivian wouldn't comment.

Want this to be true. Adding waypoints would be so nice. Has the potential to improve both ABRP and Rivian back end route planning.

This is good for Rivian, bad for the EV industry. I hope they let this continue to exist as a standalone service. ABRP seemed to be the best routing system, basically as good as the system in my tesla when I listed long routes. Rivian should make this available for other cars, but put nice rivian ads in them.

My reading of the article was that they will keep ABRP available to the public.

It would benefit them too. It’s what makes ABRP good.

It also essentially gives Rivian access to Teslas data as the thousands of Tesla owners who use ABRP alongside their built in Nav will be providing data to Rivian

Rename it to Rivian branded service and keep it available for everyone.

I thought Amazon had a bunch of IP around their delivery truck routing....shouldn't that be something that your largest strategic investor, who surely has orders of magnitude more resources than ABRP, be sharing or co-developing with Rivian?

I bet the source was the same random “Rivian employee” from that hike

Not the same algorithm. Traveling salesman vs essentially "shortest path".

Someone posted this on reddit last week. That is likely their "source".

The same ABRP that calculated my first leg of 413 miles and still with 20% remaining. Yep, should integrate perfectly into Rivian's "superior" nav system that is SO much better than any other option available with AA/CP
