Have had the R1S for about 3 months and the total range has already decreased to 266 miles on 100% charge for the standard battery (estimated full range of 270). When driving 4 miles away, range decreases dramatically by 15 miles. Is this to be expected? Certainly understand that with it being winter in NJ this is likely factoring in to the reduction.

He's got an LFP battery - that's not anywhere near as detrimental to charge to 100% as it is for large/max batteries

@op. Personally I've noticed anything below about 50 degrees and the range starts to drop. For the first 15-20 minutes while things are heating up is when range is worse. After that it gets better again. If you're only taking short trips you'll feel the hit more

Did I not post the LFP edition of EE’s video??

And to OP: Only a 4 mi discrepancy. Temperature is a factor. Is it THE reason? Who knows? We don’t know your charging routine. Could be that. Could be temperature. Could be calibration. Or all of those factors.

How is that any different from a gas powered vehicle? The first few miles are where you pay the overhead of heating up the battery (or engine block) etc. Four miles is a terrible test.

My bad! My phone cut off the last part of the title so I didn't see "LFP edition"

Unlikely that OP’s charging habits have led to battery degradation over 3 months. Most likely temperature-related. That being said, the video does address lfp chemistry. Charge to 100% once a week to keep range estimates accurate

Charging to full and keeping it at full. Degrading lithium inventory.

It’s because of the lower temps.

I remember it was a running joke on the Mach E forums that people kept asking if Ford accidentally put the wrong battery in their vehicles. As hilarious as it was, it was towards the beginning of non-Tesla EVs being available and a little more understandable that people didn’t do any research at all into how batteries work in the cold. Not really much of an excuse to buy an EV anymore and be surprised that range significantly decreases in the cold.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
it's getting colder. You're probably running the heater. The computer is starting to adapt to your driving style and the energy consumption.

Over short distances, with the heater on, you're going to see terrible #s.
