but the lack of communication about this is a little sketchy.
In my opinion this isn't anything that needed communication. We all knew things were going to change and with them opening up the network soon they were bound to use market pricing. But I do see how the pricing change could come as a shock if you notice after, I have seen them use a disclaimer about checking pricing at the station.

Maybe they will start offering a discount for connect+ customers ?‍♂

I think, back in the day, discounted RAN pricing was going to be included in a monthly subscription package (there was going to be multiple packages to choose from). Plain and simply DCFC is not going to be cheaper than gas. Not sure why it should be. If the Sauds are right and we are headed to $55 oil then DCFC will be more expensive than gas. IMO, if this happens it is a much bigger threat to EV adoption than the tax credit loss. Middle East countries have the Gaza war to pay for, and show no sign of slowing production. For the first time domestic US (and other locations) will need to reduce production to maintain market discipline. Will be interesting to watch.

I told them there’s no convenience issue, but the lack of communication about this is a little sketchy.
Do you expect communication from the manufacturer of your ICE vehicle when gas prices change at your local station? (Which they do just about every day ...) Do you expect communication from Tesla when they change the price at your local supercharger?

I don't understand this expectation, or your judgement of Rivian as less than honest if they change the price at a RAN station near you. Rivian's RAN is a business, and pricing on everything in the world is 100% a business decision which the business is free to change whenever they feel like it.

As usual, I will make my charging decisions based on price and availability. So far RAN has been significantly cheaper than other options, for me, which is why I tend to use the RAN if there are any along my route. But pricing for all the networks varies greatly from site to site, and always will.

He's in CA, with pretty high electricity rates, maybe the highest in the US, not sure.

I still find chargers in the southeast in $/Minute not KW, not RAN's as they aren't convenient, but plenty of other brand chargers in GA, TN, FL, LA and MS. Costs about $5-$10 to "fill up". Superchargers are time of day variable in my area as well with rush hour pretty high.

Sometime since late September, the RAN stations in Hays, KS and Wichita, KS both changed from per minute pricing to per kWh pricing. Bummed on that, because if you disconnected relatively early in the charge cycle before it slowed down too much on the kW rate, you got REALLY good pricing! In September, with the per minute pricing, I paid $0.14/kWh and $0.15/kWh at the Hays station. Both Hays and Wichita are now set at $0.37/kWh instead of the per minute pricing. Oh well, it was too good to last!

By my calculations (which might be wrong) that is worse than gas.

Ouch!
Not really. You need to compare to a gas truck or SUV than can match the capabilities of the R1T/S. Well, you won't find a gas truck that does 0-60 in 3.0 and go off road, but a Raptor or TRX are closest. For SUVs, you're looking at a Lambo Urus or Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Those all have a hard time getting double digit mpg.

But they sing sweet, sweet music rather than whining along like a washing machine. That alone is worth the cost in gas. Except the V6 Raptor - those just sound like doodoo.

Typically my R1T was 10-15¢/mile cheaper (public charging) than my gas/diesel trucks until I hooked up a trailer, then the gas/diesel was cheaper per mile to operate.

Comparing my R1S to the Jeep Grand Cherokee it replaced 45 cents a kWh is equivalent to 4.50 a gallon.

The R1S is pretty consistent on trips at 2.22 mile per kWh and the Jeep GC got 22 mpg on trips. Both are about $20 per 100 miles.

Some parts of the country 4.50 a gallon may sound high but here in California and on a lot of highway stops it was not uncommon to see those prices.

Today average gas for regular in California is 4.49

Do [insert gas station owner] have to inform customers when they change their prices (daily)?

To me, unless you can charge 90% of the time at home, ICE cars are cheaper (all in) and will be for some time. This is simply a factor to include when you're thinking about a new car. For most, it's probably a non-issue as what's a few bucks here or there in the grand scheme of a $80K+ vehicle?

I can sympathize with op. The pricing scheme went from a constant but they changed the operating mode to variable pricing. This is different than a gas station charging their rates on a continual basis. I don't see OP complaining or making a big deal of it.

Variable pricing makes sense if Rivian wants to stay in business, but it would have been nice to send out a quick notification before the change.
