Thanks again everyone for your opinions. They really do go along way discussing issues with people "in the know". I greatly appreciate them, and as a result have decided to continue to wait for whatever generation is offered to me as a not too early reservation holder!

And yes, I am old enough to have bought my first house at a price that is about half of the cost of the R2 Premium!

Roger
then stick that house amount into an inflation calculator and see what the price would be today. Yesterday’s $ does not equal todays $.

Hi Everyone, does anyone have an idea of when LIDAR will be available on the R2 Premium Edition? My decision to buy is based upon its availability. Not even so much for my use, but for resale value.

I don't believe a non LIDAR Autonomous+ R2 will be worth as much as one with that tech. If there was the ability to retrofit, that's a game changer, but as you all know, that has been definitively nixed by Rivian.

FYI, I have read similar posts on the forum, but no one has really answered the definitive timeline, or the possible effect to resale value.

Thanks!
Roger
I’m less concerned about having LiDAR; what matters more to me is achieving reliable point-to-point driving like Tesla’s FSD today, which relies only on cameras and performs very well (L2+ they call it). I hope Rivian can deliver comparable point-to-point capability by Q1 2027.

The consensus is re-sale will not be impacted since May people do not pay for autonomy (or FSD) and the non Lidar equipped vehicles can still do L3 autonomy.
Hmmm not sure I buy that. The Gen3 will have LIDAR yes, but it also has higher resolution cameras, and of course the Gen3 RAP. Gen3 isn't just about LIDAR.

My guess is you should plan to wait at least a year after the general release of R2. I can't believe it would make economic sense to release the car and then immediately follow up with a refresh that has significantly new hardware changes. At the very least give it a "new model year" so they can incorporate any number of running changes that inevitably need to be made to a brand new vehicle.
TBF Rivian themselves (RJ) did say it would start rolling out to R2 by EOY. They didn't want to delay production by 6-9 months waiting for Gen3 Autonomy to be ready, hence the weird timeline.

I usually don't buy a car based upon resale, but I've been reading reports about a whole lot of ecars losing sometimes 50+ percent of their value in a very short time.
Not targeting your comment directly, but just came here to say I live in a state where we have an annual personal property tax based on the book value of our cars. Last year I paid over $2,000 tax on my Rivian - and that is due every single year. On top of all the other taxes and fees we pay to the DMV, etc.

So, yeah. As far as my wallet goes, bring on that depreciation. 😉🤣

Yes. It's still an old car with mileage whether it's a 2027 or 2028 by the time 2033 rolls out. Autonomy hardware will keep changing. There will be a Gen 4 and Gen 5 Rivian too. We're only in the beginning stages of autonomy.
Agree but I feel like Rivian was the benficiary of Tesla's mistakes. It is far more obvious now the compute and camera requirements needed for L3/L4 than it was even 3 years ago. So Gen3 RAP1 is already spec'd way higher than Tesla's AI4, so it will probably be able to handle L4 and then they'll iterate on the "march of 9's" from there.
