It’s not my vehicle. A2Z confirmed it’s just Rivian’s that do this with their adapter. After almost an hour it throttles. I can pull the plug out , put it back in and bam full 11kw again. Multiple people have this exact issue
I was saying it's you're vehicle with reference to being loud during charging

As for derating you're right. It's not just your vehicle. Gen 1 has a sensitivity to hot charge port pins, and adapters can cause extra heat build up. On most vehicles that's NBD, but on a gen 1 Rivian that's sensitive to hot pins, it can derate charging

I just got my Rivian last week, gen 2 R1S. I've had this error with the included Rivian portable EVSE. For some reason, when I first put it in, it defaulted to 33 or 34 Amps. I turned it down to 32 and thought it fixed it, but it happened again last night. It'll start to charge, give the error, then some time later finish up charging. So, it hasn't been an issue yet, because I haven't gone on any long trips yet. It could be annoying if it happens when returning home with a low battery %SOC.

Others, please post any official Rivian response if you get one.

Oh, I get ya now. It’s only loud if I crank it to 48 and it’s hot in the garage. These batteries like to be cooled a lot more than Tesla batteries it seems. Size does matter! Lol

Update: enabling compatibility mode on the tesla HPWC seems to have helped. Too early to say if it sticks. I’ve never had to do this to charge a non-Tesla EV before, including other Rivians.
Glad to hear this fixed the issue.

I think my earlier success was short lived: back to charging errors tonight. Compatibility mode on the Tesla Gen3 HPWC is still enabled.

Has Rivian taken a position on what is an officially supported NACS level 2 charging adaptor?

They only reference the DC adaptor in their materials. I have a 3rd party adaptor that works fine most of the time hooked up to a rev2 Tesla EVSE. Occasionally it stops charging but usually starts right back up.

There are a lot of NACS plug L2 chargers out there in homes and elsewhere. I am now wondering if I have an issue whether Rivian will criticize my use of a “non appeared” adaptor.

My R1S will no longer take a charge using the Tesla universal EV charger, even in compatibility mode. It start yesterday and I’ve tried everything… rebooting the car, rebooting the charger, resetting the charger to factory settings then manually loading firmware updates. Are there any other tricks to get this to work? I don’t want to spend a bunch of money charging at various stations around the city or have to install another charger.
