My V1 tonneau was replaced with a V2 free under warranty last week. Early-ish S/N 10xxx. You shouldn't have needed to pay for a replacement...

You would if you're beyond the comprehensive warranty.

Sounds like Rivian nailed v3 of the PTC. However, they completely fumbled v1 and v2 and screwed over a bunch of owners along the way.
  • My PTC was removed from my Launch Edition R1T config by Rivian, as were many others.
  • I was told I could have it retrofitted later and that it would remain at its original price.
  • I buy the MTC as a stop gap, which has a major design flaw of its own.
  • Never was given any guidance or update on the PTC, when we could buy or how much.
  • v2 PTC appears.
  • Some owners who have v1 PTC have theirs replaced, which makes sense if it was broken.
  • Some owners who have v1 PTC but it still works and some who never had v1 PTC have it replaced/retrofitted. No rhyme or reason.
  • v3 PTC appears.
  • Were told if we never had a PTC, v3 will not be retrofittable to the R1T.
  • Owners like me are screwed over.
Is your serial number not included in the range?
My experience is similar to yours for my 2023 R1T Quad. I bought a soft tonneau cover in the meal time. But I did have the new version finally installed a few months ago and it is working well.

Note at one point a rep told me my truck wasn’t eligible for retrofit. They were wrong. I never had a v1 or v1.5 on the newest one installed

You had yours removed from your config and didn’t re-add it after the removal yet eventually got the retrofit for the 500$. I was told the same thing and even spoke to someone high up at Rivian and the best I was offered was 10%off the gear shop price. I’m curious how you eventually got them to cave and get the retrofit.

The parts shortages for powered tonneau covers continues. My appointment for installation has been rescheduled Oct 25 -> Nov 25 -> Dec 25 -> Jan 26 (we will call you when they are available). The service center doesn’t know which part(s) are in shortage or when the parts will be available. I was told service centers are only getting about one kit a month per service centers.

Did your v1 break? I have a similar vin but my v1 tonneau has always worked (I use it a lot and don't do anything special to maintain it). I'm wondering if they're proactively replacing all of them or are they only replacing the ones that have problems.

My working v1 PTC was replaced in January 2024. Some issues with v1.5 and it was replaced in April 2025 with another v1.5. This one was worse. They greased the rails and called it good in October. I showed them that it still wasn't working and they conceded. I just got it replaced under my extended warranty for a v2. It runs so smooth and quiet! The graphics changed on the driver display to the smaller slats. Only issue that I have now is that it does not indicate that it is open in the app as it does with doors and windows.

Mine is the same as well. It does show open or closed on the dash, just not the app.... must be a bug. I don't recall if it did or not before?

There’s a glitch somewhere that I’ve made them aware of and they are chasing it down the rabbit hole. In the app, it will indicate if anything is open just a little bit (windows, doors, frunk, gear tunnel, and tailgate) but no sensor for the PTC. On my service advisor’s truck, it will indicate that the PTC is open when it is completely open, but if it is partially open it won’t show up in the app as it does for the windows.

It does not seem to be a Rivian policy to proactively replace v1.5 PTC's with the latest version. I hoped this would be the case when I brought my R1T in for tonneau cover problems back in October, but the SC fixed the issue, at least temporarily, and I continue to limp along with v1.5. See my earlier post in this thread for more detail and my wishful thinking.

It wasn’t available to re-add before delivery in 2023. Sadly no, not $500 but $3500 or whatever.

Was trying to say it was a retrofit, being the first and only install; I never had v1 or v1.5.

When the truck was in the sun, the slats would heat up, expand, and jam the mechanism. The motor was very tired sounding.

I just bought a 2022. To my surprise, it had a working PTC! How can I tell which version that I have? It has relatively narrow slats but is pretty noisy.

P.S. Edit: Mine has 9 slats, so I guess it is not version 2. How can I tell if it is v1 or v1.5?
