Took the iKamper Skycamp Mini 3.0 out for its maiden voyage last weekend.

I can confirm that it will withstand 15mph winds with 25mph gusts…

I can also confirm that sleeping is quite challenging in that scenario 😂

I really like this setup. If we end up getting a tent I think this is how we’ll go. Do you think 2 people and a small’ish dog could fit in the tent? I guess the pup could sleep in the backseat but wondered what people typically do with their dogs with smaller tents.

It definitely fits 2 people, and I think it is marketed as "2 people and a child", so I'd think that would include a furry child :p

Great setup. Do you think the iKamper awning 3.0 (made for the mini) would work with your bed mounted mini? I'm concerned the Rivian bed mount is too low to be able to deploy the zip-attached awning... thoughts?

Ha, that is funny, I was JUST looking into that, and I can't seem to find anything (yet).

I did notice that they use a Mini Countryman on their website to demo the Skycamp Mini on and that car is 61.5" tall. Our bed is about 53" tall, so that is about 9" less height, which is definitely noticeable and probably not ideal.

Now that said, the poles that come with the awning are a fixed height, so I would think that the shape would look different, but you would still have an awning that will be the height of the poles.
Not sure if the resulting shape will be conducive to repel rain well though, as it may have a "dip" after it connects with the mouth of the tent.

Someone will have to bite the bullet and either buy one and report back, or a Seattle area local could drive down to iKamper and ask if they have a demo model that we can try out.

On a related note, I just bought an extra set of crossbars and I am planning on buying the 23Zero Peregrine R 180 degree awning with the additional walls, so that will give me a closed in area over the camp kitchen if/ when that becomes available.

sounds like we're chasing the same solution. here is an email response i got back from iKamper:

Hello Matt -

Thank you for reaching out about putting the 3.0 Mini on your R1T.

We have installed quite a few Mini's on the R1T and I honestly believe they are the perfect fit...and I really don't say that about any other vehicle but the R1T is the exception.

I have attached a few quick photos for you of a Mini on an R1T we did a little while back.

The awning is the more complicated part.

I will be honest that I have not seen a viable solution to an awning yet for the Rivian on a half height rack.

The awning really needs to be mounted at the top of the cab height to be of any use and none of them have looked great yet...but if you do find a solution iKamper or not...please let us know as we would love to make some recommendations to people like yourself in the future.

Thanks!

Do you plan to put the Peregrine 180 on the non-ladder side of your RTT setup? Worried about any interference between it and your tent?

I didn't realize that the poles were fixed.. thought they were adjustable similar to a trekking pole. This does limit the setup and may force rainfall puddles to run back towards the truck. Your plan to use a roof mounted awning is probably better - although I'd probably add the rainfly cover to the Skycamp just to provide some additional coverage at tent entry point.

What is the height above ground of our bed mounted cross bars in the highest setting mode?

I should rephrase, as I am not 100% certain they are fixed, BUT from all the youtube footage I have seen, I have not seen anyone adjust them for height, so that is where my assumption comes from, but that is all that it is, an assumption. It would make a lot more sense for them to be adjustable, from a packing-them-back-up standpoint alone.

But it sounds like all of that is moot anyway, as according to the reply you received from iKamper, it sounds like the awning is a no go for the R1T bed mount. The R1S folks will have no issues.

My plan is to rotate the iKamper, so the opening is on the driver side. Then the awning can be on the passenger side.

The 23Zero Peregrine 180-R is intended to be used on the back of trucks, hence the "R", but with its 60" length it fits perfectly on the rivian roof cross bars.

One thing that I especially like about all of this is that (provided you have some storage room) you can easily remove the crossbars with their attachments and store them, so you can use the truck in a "normal" configuration most of the time, and only attach the gadgets when you need to. This saves range and (weather) wear on the gadgets.

This was a real pain with my old Gobi racks, where everything was bolted and not easily removed.

After a bit more digging on the iKamper website, I found required height dimensions for the Annex system...and am assuming the same tent mounting height would apply for the Awning as well:

  • Skycamp Mini Annex LO
    For the Skycamp Mini installed on crossbar heights of 59” to 67.” Measures 118” x 134” x 118” to “134” x 59” x 67.”
This indicates we need crossbar height of at least 59". Assuming our crossbars are about 4" above the truck bed side rails, can we lift the truck this high in its highest setting?

Just chiming in, about to go on first trip with the Ironman 4x4 RTT. Seems to be surprisingly good build quality! I like that the cover is kind of a bed liner finish (won't scuff and scratch and less likely sun damage I think), the inside is roomy and the "mattress" is decent to start with, and their July 4th of July sale is 25% off. Check it out!

Just ordered the same with 25% Black Friday Off Coupon.... seems like great price compared to the ICamper. How has it been holding up? Any trouble installing it? I was thinking about installing it on the crossbars but lift the tent including crossbars in garage to ceiling as I dont want to drive around with RTT if I dont plan to use it for weeks.

Used it twice on two separate trips and has been fine. About to go on another weekend getaway in a week.

I received the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 mini - along with the iKamper awning attachment this week. I just did a quick setup test in the driveway and believe with the R1T in the highest setting, it will have enough height to utilize the attached awning - and still get positive drainage away from the tent/truck. The iKamper poles that come with the awning are adjustable which helps with the height adjustment, especially on uneven terrain.

I still need to field test where I can stake everything down properly, but initial observation looks promising.

Here for the "non-rivian". In my defense, this is the tent I use on my Rivian and my Rivian has been in service far too long.

I am leaning heavily towards the iKamper 3.0 Mini. Thank you for posting your pics.
