My interpretation of yesterdays changes is that Rivian almost certainly intend to deliver the max pack, but that the winch's appearance any time soon is increasingly dubious. If they can't deliver well defined accessories they may not have the capacity to do the winch any time soon.

The counter argument is that they don't make the winch so the most difficult aspects are done by others.. The custom work is the winch attachment hardware and the software interface. There is a claim that winch controls were hidden in the app at 1.3.1.

Rivian needs a lot of winch parts on hand before annoucing to not screw up their production schedule. The initial take rate on the winch may be higher than the ongoing rate. The new thing has a attractive luster.

I agree with your point about needing the parts ready to go once it's introduced, as there will likely be an influx of existing owners wanting the option added on. Will most use it? probably not, but lots will want it.

I heard a rumour they were including the winch, tent, and camp kitchen with every max pack reservation as a "Thank-you for your patience"

? ? ? ? ;)

I don’t think those announcements and a winch have much to do with each other, not saying that I think the winch release is coming soon though.

First off it‘s clear the kitchen needs a redesign for whatever reason, not going to speculate.

The tent announcement makes less sense to me, they claim it‘s due to wanting to release the ‘brake light accessory‘ which will be required with the tent. For the truck that may be reasonable (legal requirement for OEM part?) but makes no sense for the R1S. Also Rivian is not making the tent.

They have design patents on the winch bumper. There are prototypes driving around with winches.

it is well documented that there are winch controls in the Rivian app’s code.

probably simpler to say “no tent yet” vs “no tent for R1T, but R1S customers can have it.”

the latter would make for a lot of whining.

Yes, but to be fair, they were removed for a time and have only just recently come back.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
At risk of being Old Man Who Shouts at Clouds … not a huge fan of everything-app-control. Especially the winch. There are technical ways to make it work when you’re far from cell service, but this is a case where real push controls are superior for many reasons - especially safety.

On a less rant-y note - if Rivian is going to go after the Overlanding market, they will need robust support of the aftermarket. Closed ecosystem is great for controlling the experience, but as a business, it’s incredibly hard to scale.

I do very much hope they embrace 3rd parties. Wheel options, storage options, winches, lights, roll cages … the whole works. There are ways to introduce this in a controlled, quality-assured fashion without owning the entire ecosystem, and I truly hope they go that route.

I don’t think it matters what they say… there will be whining.

Yes, I think they made a legal mistake with the tent. The owner may obscure the third brake light, but as you say, probably not the vehicle manufacturer. Even if its not a DOT reg there may still be potential liability in an accident.

With third party tent availability the delay should not be terribly important.

No decent third party winch options. Even the 12V available is probably inadequate.

I configured the tent onto my post march 1st pricing R1S that's not supposed to be delivered until 2024, so we'll see come monday if they remove it from that one too.

I've got a request into Warn asking if they have plans. Doubtful I'll hear back if it's an OEM solution, but who knows.

Looking at what the stock hard bumper looks like behind the valence, I'm not likely to attempt to make my own integrated solution to fit behind there.

The winch from all appearances is a warn zeon platinum(one of the only ones with remote freespool control etc).

they‘ll surely have controls on the centre screen for it, and theres always the standard warn remote(which works on Bluetooth).
that series of winches does not even offer a wired remote.

The aftermarket needs vehicles out in the world and time with them to develop products. there Simply aren’t enough trucks out there yet.
eventually someone will get R1t/s to a SEMA measurement day.

22 weeks and counting... I ask almost every time they post photos with with lights on "when we'll see how he's wired them in, and what he's using to control them"

100% an employee as the response is typical Rivian speak with a "Soon" tossed in for good measure.
