I don't think Rivian is going after the overlanding market. They are going after the "I wish I could do big overloading trips" market. Plus electric isn't compatible with significant overlanding.

I doubt Rivian will do a 400V motor on a winch that could have a steel cable. I'll guess that the winch will have its own 24V power supply.
Yeah the majority of the #overlanding market is people dressing theirs cars up in overlanding cosplay for instagram. I think Rivian knows most of their customers don't need winches or other recovery gear.

A request for a Max Pack update was the fifth highest voted question submitted days before the AMA. It was ignored. Not a great sign.
So...non announcement to come...and stealth removal from website...got it.
Yeah, I asked that question for the AMA. I even made it a "softball", or so I thought, hoping to get some form of response. I just asked "Is the Max Pack for R1T is still on track for 1H2023".

Up until now, with production ramping so nicely, I was feeling pretty good that they'd be on track. Ignoring that question, when it was 5th highest upvoted question, speaks volumes. I doubt it'll get cancelled outright, but now thinking it'll at least be delayed again or postponed indefinitely.

Adding to that feeling, there was another question about the dual-motor variants and if they're still on track for 1H2024. Tony did answer that one, saying latest estimates are indicating they'll be pulling production forward to start in 2023.

It is wacky which is why I think they're going pull a Camp Kitchen on the Max Pack. My $0.02 is on them announcing a redesign for the Max Pack to add enhancements like faster charging, it will be indefinitely delayed, no new price will be revealed, and they'll let those of us who preordered the Max Pack switch to Large or get a refund. An unpopular view, I know. I want to be wrong and I admit that I'm purely speculating in an information vacuum. But can we all agree that it's strange that nobody at Rivian has gone on record about the Max Pack since December 2021? Not one statement that I can find. For their flagship model that's supposed to start shipping in a few months, don't you think they would have said something by now? It's not like Tony doesn't have information about a model that supposed to start shipping next quarter. He chose not to respond. I don't know why but if you were at Rivian and your class leading Max Pack really was fully tested and ready to go, wouldn't you be talking it up?

IDK, we're all just chasing our tails at this point. Maybe we'll learn something at the end of the month but maybe not. They could add delivery timing estimates to our Rivian Account page and just post the same thing they sent us in June. "Hi SacramentoElectric, we added your delivery estimate for your Max Pack to your account page. It's still 2H 2023. No, we aren't going to tell you anything else about Max Pack. Best, Tony"

I look forward to eating my words and driving a Max Pack next year. Or it gets delayed until 2024, they don't sell it for pre-march prices, I switch to the R1S and give it to my wife, and hold out for my long range Cybertruck preorder in 2024.
Good points. I will counter that their strategy may be to not encourage switching to max pack. If 20% of their customers getting vehicles in the next two quarters switch to max pack they have a big mess.

I haven't kept track. Is Rivian delivering some R1Ts ordered this year? Is the R1T order queue pretty much empty of pre-march (old pricing) buyers?

No, the queue is nowhere near empty. I pre-ordered about November 2021, and opted for the guaranteed purchase this past summer, but I haven't heard anything about scheduling since June.

The take rate for max pack was 20% of R1 preorders as of several months ago.

What was your June delivery estimate?

Edit: So I see people from Sept. have been invited to configure. So they will clear out all the non max pack R1T preorders in the next 3-4 months.

They aren’t going to build 50,000 vehicles in the next three months.

They are up the last six month of old price R1T non-max orders (Oct 21-Mar22). That certainly isn't 50,000 actual pre orders, are there? If they are building preorder from Sept 2021 then it is likely that most of the 70K preorders (end of 2021) aren't buying.

Has Rivian stated the total number of preorders since the price change reversal in March? That event likely had the unintended consequence of clearing the non-serious pre order holders from the books.

What we do know for sure is that, in the last year, they have gone from a three year R1T backlog to one year. It will be interesting to see if Q4-2021 R1T preorder holders get their vehicle this year, or if building the R1S really slows down R1T production.

In broad terms the order 1) Get R1T production smooth 2) Get R1S production smooth 3) do max pack makes sense. Production likely has little interest in introducing max pack before they know the R1S well

When I preordered in 2021 there were 60 or 70 thousand preorders placed.

last I saw they were quoting over 90k.

there have been people who preordered late last year and early this year who have trucks.

My email of June 11 said that my window was November/December 2022.

You would need to add a starting battery and a high amp battery charger. Pretty clumsy. Plus most people don't want to winch from the rear.

A realistically sized receiver winch would be 100lbs. Doable for many but not great.

It's quite common actually

12VDC is easy to wire or carry a battery like that guy. Weld a receiver on the front, and then there's no reason to lug a winch around or make the truck ugly with a big winch bumper

wouldn’t be hard to fabricobble a receiver mount that bolts to front tow hook locations….

I have a front Bumper with a hitch receiver on it on my Land Rover for this reason. It’s also really nice for moving trailers around.
They have a few already pre-made on amazon. No vouching for how strong they are though. ;)

Clearly some big announcements are on the horizon. In 2023 Rivian will announce the R2, the use of their own 300hp motors, 800V charging, updates to R1 including a winch, lights, roll bar and other overlanding essentials, plus Max Pack availability, and probably a "Plaid" R1 at 1200hp using 4 of the new motors. I imagine this blitz is being carefully orchestrated to bring in the max sized pack of new orders.

Why would they steal their own thunder and threaten the entire project for the sake of answering a Reddit thread? They wouldn’t.

It‘s all coming down the pike. Stay frosty and soon all will be revealed ;)
