Do the pins heat up if the extension is not used? Does the extension have any heat damage?
These are great questions.

There is no obvious damage to the extension cable. It does feel looser when inserting into the R1T's socket, but that might not mean anything.

The way I park in my garage, the Emporia cable barely reaches the charge port, and I have to drape the cord over the truck to make it reach. It is why I purchased the extension cable.

So it isn't easy to compare or take measurements using the Emporia cable. I am torn between doing the test you suggested, and just waiting for my next service visit when they can fix the port on the R1T. I think I will likely just wait for the repair, and then see if I get the failure again after that.

For now, the failure is intermittent. Sometimes it charges without issue, and sometimes it stops after adding about 10%. So I can live with it until the next scheduled service visit.

Yea I get it. I would look at moving the Emporia or adding a second charging unit.
Not real excited about using an extension cord to the vehicle on a regular basis.
I doubt Rivian will be happy either.

Meh. I don't care about Rivian's emotional state.

My next service appointment will be due in a month or two, so I will just see what happens after they fix the port.

I have considered moving the EVSE so it is in the middle of the garage instead of between the doors. But I like how the cable can easily reach the driveway where it is now. I don't driveway charge much, but it is nice to have the option.

I could add another EVSE, but I am not sure my breaker panel can handle it. In fact, I know I don't have room. I could put another one on the same circuit as the one I have now, but of course then I can only use one at a time. An extension cord is a more fiscally responsible approach to charge one vehicle at a time.

My wife drives a ICEV anyway. When I finally talk her into a BEV, then I will need to figure out the dual charging situation. Until then, extension cord is the best path IMO.

You know, I bet if I turned down the current from 48 Amps it would work just fine. Yet I hate the slow lane. Hate.

Since you have an Emporia charger they have the ability to network and share a circuit. You could purchase a second Emporia and add to the same circuit. I have not done it but you can read the instructions here.

If I'm Rivian and knew you were charging at 48A with an extension, I''d void the warranty for the vehicle inlet. Quite frankly, it's very stupid to push that much current while using an extension unless you enjoy the added risk of burning down your truck and your home.

We can agree to disagree.

A2Z has a reputation to protect, @mkhuffman -- but I hesitate to push any system to the top of its rating for hours on end.

Even a small difference in the manufacture of your particular unit could lead to results very different from the manufacturer's tests.

(I would say that even if the A2Z equipment weren't made in China.)

Very best wishes!

It can say whatever. But physics is physics. Heat generation (power) = Resistance * electrical current ^2. Adding an extension cable is adding resistance. Now, you can just back off the current to bring the temps down. But to run it at max current with the extra resistance is asking for trouble. And from the looks of it, you've already damaged your charge port inlet.
