This post pains me a lot to write, but...

I got my R1S reservation in December '21, and was told then to expect a 2nd half - 23 delivery. Then the next iteration of delivery schedules come out in October (I believe), and it slips to first half of '24. Then, last months delivery schedule announcement pushes it out to 2nd half of 24, of which I now expect to be November- December of 24, at the earliest.

On top of my anticipated three year wait, I see that many new reservation holders have jumped the line, in Rivian's attempt to generate higher revenue per vehicle. I would love to have a Rivian, and I love the looks of them as I see them driving down the road. But, you know, life moves on, and I have found better things to do with my money, and I agreed with my wife that maybe we should forego the Rivian in favor of those things.

So I am not going to take the Rivian. I am really ticked off at Rivian because of this. IMO, these pushbacks have been Riv's way of saying to us pre-price increase orders "Yes, you can have your Rivian, but F-You, you'll get it when we want you to get it, and only after everyone else gets theirs." I feel part of their motivation is to push these out as long as possible to force us either to cancel, or ship only when it is convenient for them.

So I am not going to cancel my order. Instead, sometime after I get my 8-steps notification, and only before I absolutely have to pay for the Rivian, will I cancel. This is my F-You back to them. I know it's minor, I know they don't really care and will just move my reservation to the next one in line but it's the only little thing I can do. After all, if I cancel now, then RJ, Sandy, and others can just point to my cancellation as evidence that pushing deliveries out for us is working. I am not going to give them that little bit of satisfaction.

Kinda surprised you're pushed so far out. There are several R1S' already delivered in our area, and this is one of the top 3 places for overall deliveries in the country, so it's not like you're far away from an SC or something.

Sorry to hear you've come to this decision, that sucks. I feel your pain, I didn't have to wait as long as you, but I felt my share of frustration with the moving delivery targets throughout 2021 and 2022.

Sorry to hear that. Are there a lot of confirmed reports of post-price change R1S pre-orders who have already taken delivery/confirmed config?

My personal recommendation is not to cancel it. Because cancelling it will not hurt them, they will find the next person in line to take the delivery. And chances are, they might even sell it at the Post-March price.

I say, take the delivery if you can swing the finance and flip it.
This way you make money off of it, if the demand for Rivian is still there.

They won't care when you cancel...as they will just move on to the next person in line. It's a business and your decision won't make a difference to them so long as they have a big queue of people in line.

If you've decided to move on, it's best financially to cancel your order now and do something else with your $1000 deposit. Why let Rivian earn interest on YOUR money for the next two years? I know the overall interest compounded over the next two years isn't a lot in the big scheme of life...but it's still something.

If you really want to stick it to them take delivery then return it on the seventh day with 950 miles.
I am considering that, but then, I'm afraid I might like it too much...

Totally understand the frustration, but Rivian never promised you or anyone else they would be delivering vehicles in sequential order. So if that was an expectation you had, it was something you imposed on the situation yourself. You are free to be mad about whatever you like, but be realistic about the reasons you are mad….

While it’s obvious newer orders are “jumping” the line, there is actually no evidence it’s an effort to generate higher revenue. In fact it appears the biggest change is Rivian starting to produce their dual motor vehicles.
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...urely-be-from-the-launch-of-dual-motor.12315/

There are all kinds of reasons Rivian might produce vehicles out of order: Batching for efficiency, Supply shortages, new motors entering production, etc…

What you are planning to do won’t hurt Rivian in any way. Someone else will be enjoying that R1S within weeks of you canceling. If you want to feel better about the situation because you feel you’ve been wronged, take delivery and flip it. At least then you will actually benefit and have more $ to spend on those “other things” you speak of.

A constructive approach would be to identify R!S ordered after you yet delivered this year. Insist on an explanation. While color choices and location affect delivery timing, the variance should be months, not years.

You have the option of documenting both your Rivian contact and R!S deliveries here, which perhaps creates max annoyance if that is your goal.

OP you have a legit complaint and I don’t blame you. It’s not a FIFA queue but there is a certain lack of transparency on the formula and reasoning for the delivery date adjustments with no clear way to inquire and get an authoritative and meaningful reply.

COdogman, I have agreed with just about every post you have made but....
This is an assumption I and any reasonable person has about a line. Yes we all know buisiness work differently once we think about it but if I go to a restaurant and am in a line for a table and the guy behind me gets a table based on the color of shirt he is wearing or he has a youtube channel or he is way better looking than I am (not hard) then yes, I am pissed and don't want to ever go to that restaurant again.

I (think) I know why Rivian is doing it and agree with it mostly but as said ad nauseum here, they need to communicate what they are doing better. Even if they said something stupid like we made too many Midnight+21 inch wheels because those are the parts we had and everyone with that config jumps the line, I would be much happier.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out I guess? Congrats to someone in the Washington area that gets an amazing vehicle early thanks to you.

Enjoy your... Traverse? OP.

I am sorry to hear that your order has been delayed without an explanation. However, I have heard that changing your configuration pushes you back in the line, even if there are other people with the same configuration that ordered after you. It's the change that puts you further back. Rivian CS recommended that I keep my config the same until it is time to confirm my configuration and I have a guide assigned.

Did you happen to change your config between delivery estimate updates?
