I just think people don’t want an even playing field when talking about EV fires. EV fires do not have the same negative impact when looking at other vehicle type statistics. We know fires are bad but people should provide all relevant data to put things in perspective.

For instance, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the National Transportation Safety Board found that hybrid vehicles had the most fires per 100,000 sales at 3474.5. There were 1529.9 fires per 100k for gas vehicles and just 25.1 fires per 100k sales for electric vehicles.

Some other fueling station stats;

• • In the U.S., there are approximately 5,000 gas station fires every year.
• • Over 50% of gas station fires are caused by vehicle fires.
• • Gas station fires result in an average of 20 civilian injuries each year.
• • Around 35% of gas station fires are due to static electricity igniting gasoline vapors
• • Pump-related accidents at gas stations result in an average of 5,000 injuries per year.
• • Gas station incidents involving spills or leaks account for over 10% of reported accidents at fueling stations.
• • Gas station accidents cost the U.S. economy an estimated $10 billion annually in property damage and medical expenses.

One of the worst tragedies I was aware of in my time in Iraq was a fuel tanker explosion.

A fuel tanker rear-ended another tanker as part of a convoy while driving under night vision. The fuel spill instantly ignited into a massive fireball.

There wasn’t enough left of the soldiers to bring home for a burial.
