Hitchhiking Ghosts! (HVAC Bug)

I've been having an anoying bug with HVAC on my Gen 2 R1S. When I go to remotely turn on climate control from the app, more often than not I see this error message:

So apparently I have ghosts occupying the vehicle!

But here's the weird part. If I wake the vehicle (for example by venting the windows or unlocking the doors) the message goes away and I can turn on climate. But I have to be fast, because if I wait to long and the vehicle goes back to sleep the error comes up again.

I'm VERY certain it's not a hardware issue with any of the seat sensors, because while driving it NEVER shows any symptoms of a seat sensor mis-reading. The little seat diagram showing which seats are occupied is always accurate, and it has never put itself into park (like it does when the driver's seat is acting up). Additionally, when I walk away from the vehicle it goes to sleep immediately every time (which it wouldn't do if it thought somebody was inside).

Anyone else experience this bug? Has anyone else's vehicle been haunted with more than just costumes?

I get it fairly often with my Galaxy phone and G1. Seems it goes to that message while still waking truck or something...but it usually goes away after 10-15 seconds.

Oh good idea! I hadn't thought of that. Will I have to re-pair my phone key?

Interesting. Maybe it's a bug in the Android app specifically. Though mine doesn't show that when it's in the process of waking. It only shows when it's asleep (aka the entire time it's parked until I wake it by unlocking etc)

Do Gen 1’s also have the little diagram that shows which seats are occupied? Because if they do i’ve never noticed it.

They do not. Gen 2 has weight sensors in every seat. They were enabled by the 2024.35 update

I tried clearing all app data (which did log me out and erase my phone key). But no luck. The error re-appeared

They do not. Gen 2 has weight sensors in every seat. They were enabled by the 2024.35 update

Gen1 also has seat weight sensors. I had a suspected problem with mine early on. Gen1 just doesn’t have a graphic visualizing seat occupancy.

Oh interesting. I thought gen 1 had weight sensors only in the front seats. My understanding is that for the back seats it determines occupancy only by if the seat belts were buckled or not

@mpshizzle thanks for pointing this out in the other thread. Service center is doing a technical diagnostic today and will let me know in few hours. Hopefully it is just software bug ?? better than them “ripping apart the front seat” to replace occupancy sensor.
For me the iOS app climate bug only happens ~10 minutes after the car goes to sleep. Initially after locking car it will still work for a short few minutes.

Yes, keep us posted! Does your vehicle delay it going to sleep at all? Or does it sleep immediately when you walk away?

It sleeps within 5 seconds as mentioned in latest software update. Note just took delivery yesterday. (Gen2 trimax)

Interesting, if that error comes up for me (it seems to mostly happen at home. So possibly location based?) it happens immediately when asleep. And it goes away as soon as I wake it.

But yes, keep us posted what the techs say

Oddly ya it’s fine so far at Costco right now. (30+ mins) But I was able to repro it at Rivian service center after 5-10 mins.
Hopefully they get whatever diagnostics they need from the investigation to fix it for all affected.

edit: at home. Immediately having the bug after car sleeps now.
