I've had a Halloween theme the last 3 years, I would expect no different this year! They take pride and great enjoyment in this opportunity.
Yeah, and it's fine. It's just, give it to us on Oct 1, not 10 days before Halloween and then disable it a couple of days later.

The scariest costume would be a “major battery error” message followed by a 20 second countdown to a bricked truck and all dead screens. Then 30 seconds later it wakes up again and you exit Halloween mode forever. That should give all Rivian owners a fright.
That will be for April 1st!

why do they always wait so long to release it?
Dude, they make a software release every ~4 weeks. When was the last one? The next one will be ~4 weeks after that. There's nothing mysterious going on here.

In the past, Rivian has pushed Halloween to all users within a few days, unlike all the other monthly release where they are pushed out over the course of ~2 weeks.

Not my experience - it was late October on my truck.

just push the update, for christ's sake
I don't recall, but do they need to "push" an entire update for it? Iirc, it's an enablement package. Already downloaded, just waiting for a flick of the on switch to turn on the features (or date-triggered?).

Last year my R1T had the front pedestrian speaker unplugged when the halloween update came through. I plugged it in after that update, and it still had the lock sounds from 2023 until the next update came in. I imagine gen2 might not work the same way but I really haven't done a deep dive into the ECU differences.

It was late October for *everyone*. I didn't say or imply otherwise.

Here's just one of the threads (there are others ...):
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...talling-halloween-theme-costumes-return.34781

People started reporting it on 19 Oct last year, and non-Connect+ started reporting it 2 days later. Aside from the usual exceptions/problems that certain people had, the rollout seemed to complete within 6 days. This was notable at the time because Connect+ was still fairly new and people were complaining loudly about either (from Connect+ subscribers) not getting priority or (from non-Connect+ subscribers) about being delayed so close to Halloween.

Every other update since then, over the past year, non-Connect+ users haven't started getting the update until 6-7 days after the Connect+ people, and then it takes another week after that to finish (again, with the usual exceptions).

So yes, they pushed out last year's October update much faster than usual, and I expect to see the same this year. But the bigger point is that it is NOT late this year - it's only been 3 weeks since the last update. If the October/Halloween update comes out next week, it will be right on time.

The Gen 2 exterior speakers do appear to be different. Rather than an ECU right at the speaker, it appears to be connected to a larger, centralized ECU (most likely one of the zonals). In addition to pre-defined sounds used for lock/unlock/pedestrian safety they seem to have the ability to stream audio from the main infotainment computer. For last year's halloween mode you could turn on exterior sound effects to go with the costumes, and they were triggered in real time from the app.
