I searched and did not find a "generic" thread on Gen 2 issues so I thought I'd start one.

We took delivery of our Gen 2 2025 R1S Dual/Max on 7/24 at the Colorado Springs Service Center. We live 5 hours away so before driving there I asked for and recieved confirmation that the vehicle had passed all inspections and there were no issues that would interfere with taking it home. We paid for it in full via ACH transfer the day before. We knew there might be issues since the Gen 2 is so new so we planned to stay there with friends for a couple nights before driving home.

Issues identified at pickup:

1. Small weatherstripping misalignment on front passenger door. Seemingly fixed by tech with a heat gun while we waited.
2. AC was not blowing cold air. It was 90+ degrees and the AC was not cooling it at all. They took it back to service and diagnosed a leak in the AC compressor that was letting all the fluid drain out. They did not know when the part will be available - they said might be anywhere from a week to a month or more.
3. While parking after driving the vehicle around for about 30 minutes (without AC in 90+ degree heat) it briefly threw a "critical battery error" message and rebooted itself. Error message disappeared after reboot but we asked them to look into this as well.

Everyone at the service center was very apologetic and they gave us a loaner Quad motor R1S to take home, and agreed to deliver ours to us in NM once it is fixed. Fortunately they had a loaner available to give us. So we are happy with how they took care of us and I will report back here when I have more info.

@BearMan123 also has a gen 2 with a leaking heat pump. Currently being checked out by corporate engineering last I heard
I did see that thread, however just to be clear, they stated that our issue was a leaking AC compressor which I assume is not the same part as the heat pump.

EDIT: apparently I was mistaken and it may actually be the same issue.

I realize the AC system has been reengineered in the Gen 2, but Rivian really needs to get their arms around the HVAC QC problems. This seems to be a consistently weak area for them.

It's essentially the same thing. Technically, the heat pump is the entire system, which uses an AC compressor to do its work.

Air conditioning is basically a type of heat pump. Traditional AC just moves heat from the cabin to the outside of the vehicle.

The only difference now is that the system can run in reverse and pump heat from the outside of the vehicle to the cabin. Thus the "heat pump" name. But it's all the same system.

I've had a series of mostly minor/temporary issues in the couple of weeks since picking up my Gen 2 R1S DM.

- Highway assist stopped working after I stopped for lunch half way through my drive home picking it up, and continued to not work the next day even after a soft reset (on roads where I know it should work). Must have fixed itself sitting overnight or something, because it started working the next day and has worked ever since.

- Soft reset makes the car forget the phone key pairing. Fixing it is just a matter of deleting the pairing from the phone and re-doing it but it is still strange that this happens. I only ever reset my previous Gen 1 R1S a couple of times in the year that I owned it but I don't remember this happening.

- Console USB-C ports stopped working. As many others have reported, at one point I noticed my drive cam icon said it was disabled even though it had been working earlier in the day, and sure enough both USB-C ports inside the console were inoperative. A soft reset fixed them.

- Low beam headlight error, which I got when the car tried to switch them on going through a tunnel. Stopped to check them out shortly after and sure enough the driver's side low beam wouldn't go on. Soft reset didn't do anything in the moment, but the light started working again ~20 minutes later when I checked it in my driveway. Haven't driven it again since so I'm not sure if it was a one-time thing or not. I submitted a service report for this one so they can tell me if it's a known issue or something that should be checked out to make sure nothing is loose anywhere.

On the bright side, my AC works so well I feel like it gets too cold in there half the time.

AC also cools the battery. So it is a critical component which can shutdown the car or cause battery damage. No to mention no L3 charging.

Picked up my Gen2 on 7/26. Did a careful inspection (much more than with any prior car purchase). Three issues identified thus far:

1. The Rivian delivery person said the “halo trim” (the top chrome) was misaligned and that they have been having this issue on all Gen2s.

2. possibly related: the rear passenger side door bounces very slightly upon opening. (At first both the delivery person and my wife thought I was crazy but after seeing it from the right angle, both agreed.)

3. The front truck was off center; 90% of gap is on passenger side.

The Rivian delivery person helped me put in a ticket and we have a visit scheduled for September. Hopefully any other “issues” will present themselves before then.

This is my first EV and first three row. It’s taking me some time to get used to driving such a larger vehicle but we are loving the adventure so far. I am not sure I would have noticed the above issues if I weren’t looking carefully. They aren’t taking away from my enjoyment, perhaps in part because it was easy to get them on the list for repair. There was no “oh, that’s not an issue” kind of pushback or anything weird like that.

This is wild the amount of issues on Gen 2. Yeah yeah new car manufacturer I get it, but some of these issues are basic.

My SC calls us "Trailblazers" lol.

Not gonna lie, this thread makes me kinda wish I had bought a ‘24 off the shop instead. But we’ll see.

plenty of people with gen1 issues and plenty of flawless gen1’s too

Looks like the center console USB problem is software related and not a problem with the harness or ports themselves.

Wow the doors on the Gen 2 are so hollow and cheap feeling. I thought this was being over exaggerated until I experienced it for myself in person.

Cost cutting at its finest. I get it. Give and take, can't have it all. The most important question is, do you you think any aspect of safety from a side impact would be affected from any cost cutting measures on these new tin foil doors? ie. not so much the sheet metal, but the safety beams behind it; have those been neutered as well?

I'm curious what the crash test results will be on the new Gen 2s? Perhaps the same as being excellent, but I'm curious now mainly in any overlap injuries due to any potential cost cutting in structural integrity.

It’s crazy they haven’t fixed the halo trim issue. Every single R1S I’ve seen up close (probably 25+), including mine, has at least one or both sides of the trim protruding when viewing it from behind the vehicle. I would have thought with a refresh that would have been a top priority to fix.
