I was sitting in a parking space, parked, when a sedan straight up hit my wheel trying to park in the adjacent space. The entire truck rocked, but Gear Guard caught nothing at all. Zero. If I’m in the car, id GG somehow disabled? Does the car have to be locked?

Pretty disappointed in GG; my car is the most valuable piece of gear of them all.

Correct if you are in the vehicle it doesn’t record… but you were right there did you get out and confront the driver? The vehicle has to be locked to have gg active…
I did. From the look of their bumper they’ve done this a few times. Got a bunch of lame excuses about how the space was tight (it was huge) and how this Saturday had been a rough one. No insurance.

I wonder if GG will catch a car in the frame without a person in it.

GG should be active even if the car is unlocked. The open door handles are very tempting, and it only takes a second to swipe from or key a car. When I’m at the post office the proximity lock won’t even activate; the parking spot is too close.

In those situations of close proximity to vehicle; I’ve gotten into the habit of having the app up when leaving vehicle hit lock; then subsequently close the app so it stays locked. Then simply open it on my walk back to the truck… Other option would be to do the same with the keyfob…

My guess is that, when it becomes available, the Dash Cam functionality will take over the cases you are in the car. I know that doesn't help you right now though.

Sorry, that sucks. The answer might be Dash - cam… supposedly coming to an OTA in the future.

If you thought Vampire Drain was bad already...

Gear Guard is there for when you are not, not to record your every moment in the truck.

Sorry boutcha, but if you want this then turn off proximity locking and leave it locked at all times, with Gear Guard recording everywhere.

Did you call the cops? Insurance or not
It seems like they need a citation at the very least.

Ugh, that is the worst. It always seems like the worst drivers are the ones without any insurance (probably because they can’t afford the increases after they keep driving this badly). I’m so sorry.

We don’t know yet if the dash cam would include other views than just front facing from the windshield. Seems like GG would have helped if you weren’t there but no camera would catch more than you did as a witness.

I was thinking about this a few years ago when I was getting a dashcam. If something happens it’s highly unlikely the camera is going to capture a license plate, and even the best ones have limited visibility because of where they are located in the vehicle. I bought one that had a second small wired camera I installed in the rear window, but it still has a bunch of blind spots. Some have a second rear facing camera built in to the windshield camera, which would be great if you are an Uber driver but useless for everyone else IMHO.

Since the last update Gear Guard has been essentially MIA for me. I have literally tried to get gear guard to work by cycling it on and off and turning it on “all locations” and away from home. I have had all keys nowhere near the truck and went out and jumped on the tailgate and attempted to open the doors and Gear Guard doesn’t trigger. I guess with previous GG complaints they decided to just go with almost no functionality? It want the old Gear Guard back.

Give HIS info to YOUR insurance company. Years ago I was smacked badly by an uninsured motorist. My insurance company repaired my car (minus the deductible) and went after him. I never had to do anything else. He started paying them back. The "first money" that the insurance company recovers (in Texas anyway) goes to repay the deductible, and THEN the insurance company starts to recoup its losses. It took about a year to get my money back, and I have no idea when (or if) they got theirs, but I know that they can be relentless. It helps that we were on a public road. It may not be "against the law" to drive without insurance in a private parking lot.

I had a collision years ago on a weekend far from any neighborhood so decided not to call the cops since the guy handed me his insurance information. It turned out his insurance was a piece of cr@#%. They claimed they can't get hold of the driver and didn't do anything more. My insurance paid for the repair minus my deductible.

In this particular case GG might have snagged the plate from the side camera because of the very shallow approach of the other car, but perhaps not.

I filed a claim with my insurance and I don’t expect any problems even without the video. I was phenomenally lucky in that this guy banged my wheel but no painted surfaces. The wheel is scratched but should be repairable cheaply even if insurance doesn’t kick in.

Now I’m worried GG won’t catch the accident that happens when I’m loading groceries in my frunk. Lightning can’t strike twice, I hope.

I had to do a soft reset to get ours working again after the update as we had the same issue. That resolved it!

Thanks that seems to have fixed it, I guess I shouldn’t be afraid to restart the software more often. With my Tesla, I would restart it all the time even while driving so not sure why I’m so timid with my Rivian.
