You have a USB drive, flash drive, portable external hard drive, or something else plugged into the center console? Unplug it and plug back in. Test it on a PC while it's out, if you want. If that doesn't work, try infotainment reset:

yes, I have a 1 tb Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD in the center console. I unplugged and plugged it back in and it didn’t fix it. I can see the recordings when I connect it to my computer.
This is actually the 2nd time it happened. 1st was fix by a soft reset. I’m curious why this is happening.

I mean, 2nd time over how long a period of time? Two times in a year, I wouldn't worry. It happens. Two times in a day would be more concerning. 😉

Is there anything on there that you want to keep? Maybe format it and try again? Check the usb-c connection. Is it solid? Jiggly?

I have this happen every so often. I find that unplugging and reinserting the drive works. Failing that, I think I've had to do a reset once or twice as well to correct it.

I've run into this when my SSD gets really warm. My fix: disconnect it, let it cool down, then plug it back in. I've also moved the SSD to the top of the center console instead of burying it in the lower compartment — better airflow up there, and it seems to have helped.

Nothing important. I have a service appointment next week for something else and I will add a request for this. Il keep you posted.

Does the brand of the SSD matter? Should I switch to the Samsung T7 shield?

So I went to service center. They said one of the files was corrupted so we erased all the files and they did a hard reset. Worked for 2 days and now media is offline again. I will try to reformat the SSD. I don’t see FAT32. I will try exFAT and see it will fix it.

I know a lot of people who're using SSD drives are also using 90-degree or right-angle adapters to route the cord in various ways. Just to confirm, are you using any "weird" adapters? Maybe try a different cable, or a different drive?

Personally I use these little blue Samsung flash drives. >3 years and iirc I've only had to remove & reformat once.

Might be worth giving this a shot. Good luck!

Yes, I’m using a 90 degree adapter I bought from Amazon. Do you think that’s an issue? I tried to contact bestbuy to return the SSD and they said the item is not returnable bec it’s over 15 days.

I would try to eliminate all possible sources of issue. And some of those cheap adapters are 🗑. Throwing a different flash drive in there is a real easy way to test if your issue is with the vehicle or with the storage device.

So Gear Guard/incident footage is not stored on the external SSD, but on the eMMC on the AXM.

Gear Guard is processed by an Ambarella CV5 SoC and, from what I can infer, is then served to the Android infotainment OS over NFS or a similar protocol (dont think they are exposing as a USB gadget, but who knows - I was bidding on an eBay AXM2 to tear down - but they have all gone for more than I'm prepared to pay).

There was a bug in earlier releases where, on wake from sleep, the Gear Guard mount could fail, which produced exactly the scenario you were seeing.

Unfortunately, I had this too, but in a much more severe form than normal. In my case, it was eventually RCA’d to a failing eMMC on the AXM board. More concerning was that this failure was determined to have been caused by an excessive number of motion events. That led me to ask what the duty cycle and expected MTBF were for the onboard storage, which, unsurprisingly, I never got a clear answer to. Like you I was also getting corrupted footage - blending of cameras and tearing of frames*. They replaced the AXM, and since then it has only happened once in the last four months or so.

An infotainment reset will most likely fix it. But if you are seeing this frequently, it is worth having them inspect the eMMC. Reformatting will fix issues with corruption, but will not fix a device thats actually failing - they did that twice with mine before escalating to engineering.

Examples of the kind of corruption caused by failing onboard eMMC:
