Front wheel squeal

I opened a service ticket Thursday and the car is getting towed to the Franklin SC tomorrow…

I have a Gen1 2024 R1T dual motor with 17k miles.

it looks like I have a failed wheel bearing on the front left tire. That’s a pretty early failure in my opinion. I’m used to seeing wheel bearings start to fail after 5 years or more and 70-80k miles.

I’m curious how often this is happening with other owners.

I pulled out my jack pucks and floor jacks and did a quick check…


Do you guys think it’s a failed bearing?

Yup sounds like a failed wheel bearing. I remember reading of one or two other cases of premature failure. Rivian will get you all fixed up.

Likely a bearing failure or dust/sand stuck somewhere

This is where it has become frustrating owning a Rivian. Luckily, I’m still under the 4 year, 50k mile comprehensive warranty.

3 days after the ticket was opened, Rivian arranged an auto transport service to the Franklin service center. It took two days to get there (200 miles door to door). Problem was quickly diagnosed and the next day, they replaced the hub, knuckle bolts and half shaft.

So no car for a week and I had to spend all day yesterday picking it up… this is the 3rd critical issue (related to build quality - requiring a SC visit to make drivable) this car has had in 7 months of ownership. It is a 400 mile round trip to pick it up each time something happens.

Just looking at part costs from some of the junkers online, it would have been $800 in parts alone to fix this if it was out of warranty. Plus the labor and towing costs for 200 miles to a service center if I wanted Rivian to fix a future problem like this after 50k miles.

Somebody talk me out of selling it now while it still only has 18k miles on it.

Sell it regardless of it being a Rivian or not.

Being 400 miles from a SC and already having 3 issues requiring the round trip drive is an insane amount of patience and self restraint.

I don't recommend anyone buy a Rivian living more than an hour from a service center the same thing for any brand of vehicle. Love my R1T, love the brand, but my work is 2 miles from a SC in Atlanta so zero inconvenience if anything goes wrong.

I had the exact same issue as you. My vehicle was towed to the Eastvale Center a week ago, and they replaced the bearing hub. Surprisingly, they mentioned it was a recall for my R1T. If it’s a recall, why only mine?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Interesting they are saying it’s a recall now. My service invoice is about identical to yours.

I will say they diagnosed it and had new parts on it pretty quickly when I brought mine in. It actually took much longer to get the car out there than to fix it.

2023/2024 R1 owners should proactively check for this. The best way is find a quiet street, put your window down and do a few slow start/stops. Turn off the HVAC and radio first. Listen for a high pitch squeak that shows up when the car moves. To be extra thorough, get your jack pucks out and jack up the front wheels (one at a time is ok) and see if there is any lateral or longitudinal play like in my video on the original post. There should not be any. Turn the wheel by hand and see if you hear a squeak. Make a service appointment if you do hear anything. It’s not going to get better on its own.

FSAM's aren't recalls. Rivian has just been taking the opportunity to check the hub fasteners on every vehicle

Even if you're close to an SC, many of them are still booking three or four months out. So for non-critical issues you're still quite inconvenienced, sadly. For critical issues, they will squeeze you in, I'm sure.

I just looked back at a service ticket from August 2024 and saw that the front right bearing hub was also replaced at that time. I had taken the vehicle to the service center back then because I heard an unusual noise coming from the front while driving.

Now, both front bearing hubs on my R1T have been replaced. This is really disappointing for all Rivian owners, in my opinion. My truck only has about 18,000 miles on it.

It sounds like this should be a recall. Why aren’t they informing us about it?

Rivian Service can and should equip mobile techs (or 3rd party providers) to do these replacements.

Unlike the 12v battery issue, changing a hub / bearing assembly is not that different from ICE cars and does not require any special electronic magic. Any halfway competent mechanic could do it if the replacement parts were available.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I just posted another thread—my R1T actually had two out of the four wheel bearing hubs replaced. The R1T has four hubs, right?

Correct - there are 4… but presumably there is some difference since all the failures seem to be happening in the front. Only somebody at Rivian would be able to shed light on that with any accuracy.

They don’t exactly publish a parts catalog so it’s hard to say if the hubs in the back are even the same part.
