First road trip - range concern / question

Just returned to SoCal on a trip to New England and back. Took the Tesla (free charging) and found something interesting about cold weather range. Temps ranged between -8 to upper 30s, I found even in single digit temps the first leg of the day range was quite a bit less but after that first charge the subsequent legs that day between charges the consumption was pretty close to my normal consumption.

That kind of maps to my maiden R1S trip last January where I got 2.2 miles per kWh on a 5100 mile trip.

Does anyone else see this on long trips in the cold? For reference this trip in the Model S was 6500 miles averaging 310 Wh/mile (3.2 miles per kWh).
I heard that battery was so cold at the beginning and motor heat could not help much. after DC charging, battery will be toasted so efficiency goes up.

That’s because after that first leg, the battery got warmed up gradually by driving at highway speeds and following the first charge it likely jumped to above optimal for charging (charging warms up the battery) which is also it’s happy place for energy discharge, not just for charging.

Yes, this is true and really helps on cold long trips.
