First long distance trip concerns

Had my truck one year and am traveling from Seattle to Omak Wa. about 300 miles , cant charge in Omak so it looks like Wenatchee where do you charge there how long will it take...I will probably have 150 miles left when I get there, any place to eat nearby... I see that Tesla a number of chargers in the area.....a little anxious ..thanks Mike

There is an EA station in Leavenworth, probably your best bet. Check plug share and see what your options are. Or use ABRP to plan your route to get some more ideas if needed.

That trip should be no problem - I've done Chelan, which is similar. Like @jjswan33 said, ABRP and PlugShare are essential for planning. Don't forget about Tesla *destination* chargers (NOT superchargers), which you can use with an adapter - those come in handy sometimes.

There are charging options in Omak, and you should plan to charge there before your return. Bring your portable charger, so you can charge at 120V overnight if nothing else.

Leavenworth is a good bet for a stop, but the Safeway is a little far from food. City Hall is very near a lot of food options, but the 50kW charger there may not be working so I would try there first but count on the EA station at Safeway. You can charge in Wenatchee if you want, but they're all Level 2. The Public Market has a few free chargers, food options, a park next to the river, and easy walking distance to more food options downtown. The PUD is also an option.

Also consider "topping up" in North Bend and/or Ellensburg on the way (If you take I-90, or Monroe if you take 2). That will reduce the stress of worrying about your next charge. I personally find it's more pleasant to stop more frequently and charge for shorter times rather than to drive until "empty" then hope for the best at the nearest charger. Ellensburg is a few miles out of the way, but the detour will save you time rather than spending 2 hours at a Level 2 charger somewhere else.

Thanks for the info ..looks like the Safeway in Leavenworth is my best bet. Not familiar with the CCS fast charging, looks like the Rivian will accept that . Having used about half of my 300 miles of range from Seattle how long will it take to get a full charge so I can get to Omak and then back to Safeway to charge to get home...again this is my first trip and I dont want any surprises, how many charging stations are there , do I need to sign up for a service to use them or will a credit card work thank Mike

Highly recommended to get all the apps - Electrify America, EVGo, Shell Recharge, etc etc. If you sign up for EA monthly (I think it’s $4/mo) you get a substantial per-kWh discount, which pays for itself instantly. Best to have the app on-hand and ready (with your credit card info already loaded) because their readers are definitely hit or miss.

Rivian’s charger is CCS, which will accept pretty much any CCS charger out there (if it’s in working order).

In terms of charge times, that’s related to battery temp and charge level. There‘s significantly diminishing returns getting to 100%, so if you can make it by getting around 80%, do that instead. If you have time, though, go for it.

Check the status of the chargers using something like Plugshare or ABRP. And once you have the app, check status there as well.

This all sounds cumbersome, and it’s while it’s clearly not ideal, it’s literally 90 seconds of any trip you take once you’re all set up.

Sounds good I will get all those apps, I am sure they will help and give me peace of mind. Regarding my post has anyone used the chargers at Safeway in Leavenworth and can you answer the questions I have about that location as that is where I will be charging. thanks Mike

I am using Shell-Recharge , $0.15-$0.20/kwh with no subscription.

It also supports roaming networks, FLO, Ev Connect , EV Go, and ChargePoint, so you can pay directly from Shel-recharge app instead of install extra app.

When you use a fast charger you will want to prepare the battery first. So about 20 minutes before getting to the charger select it in the navigation as your destination and at some point you will see a message saying your battery is preparing for a fast charge. On a real 150+ fast charger it will take around 20 minutes to get to 80% full. Good luck.

With my Rivian and using a CCS charger how long with it take to charge from 20 percent to 100 percent...also does the last 20 percent take longer to charge like with the J2s

Yes charging to 100% will take forever. Stop at 80% if you can.

Charging from 20 to 80%, Assuming you have a 150kW charger or higher being delivered (which the Leavenworth EA station has) it takes around 30-40ish min. Kyle Conner has some good videos on Rivian charging curve. Though this video is is a year old and Rivian has since provided updates, it will give you a deeper understanding of DCFC "curve" for the Rivain.



I recommend checking out his channel for some of his guides (great resource) if you are looking to dive into and understand some of the nuance of electric vehicle DCFC....

OK.... how long to charge from 20 to 80 percent on a CCS charger ?
Varies widely by the CCS station and the conditions.

In good conditions (moderate air temperature, the vehicle has had a chance to precondition prior to charging) on a 225kW-at-450V-capable CCS station (500 Amp, most "350 kW" are capable of this,) it can take 30-40 minutes.

In very cold conditions when the vehicle hasn't had time to precondition and a 50kW CCS station, you're looking at 2 hours.
