Are there hardware updates on more recent (or future) vehicles that will allow for full self driving, or is it all based on software?

Second question, is there a database that i can use to review service calls/issues on specific used R1T's that i may be interested in purchasing?

Cameras have been updated on Gen2 compared to Gen1 which allow for self driving. Gen1 will never have full self driving based on the cameras and the system operating them.

I dont know of any Rivian specific system that shows all the work done on the vehicle. Just the normal CarFax sort of stuff.

You could request service information from the perspective seller if buying used. Or if buying used through rivian they may be able to provide it. Do not forget to use a referral code if you decide to buy new.

It’s self driving on highways and freeways If it’s a rural highway with cross traffic it won’t work.
There’s also lane assist which slightly bumps you away from lines but isn’t FSD.

I sent you a DM as well!!!

good luck

I still think there is a significant amount of value to be gained from a 1st Generation R1T over a second Generation R1T. IMO autonomous driving or "Enhanced Highway Assist" is not a compelling enough reason alone to purchase a Gen 2 over Gen 1. You can find a good used Gen 1 R1T for under $50k, whereas a Gen 2 would likely be $20k higher. I am still very happy with my Gen 1 and plan to hold it until Gen 3 is revealed.

As far as service records, Rivan certainly has the data for any recall or warranty or other service related issues. I don't know if anyone has tried, but I bet you can call the Rivian Service number 1-855-RIVIAN5 and request some information for a specific VIN.

i would definitely buy a Gen 2 vs. a Gen 1. I had a Gen 1 for 3 weeks as a loaner and I couldn't wait to get into my Gen 2.

Gen 1, upto MY24, development is as far as it gets (basically advanced cruise control, not handsfree). Gen 2, MY25-on, all software based. Details will be revealed at an event on 12/11. Google "Rivian universal handsfree". There are and will never be factory supported retrofit for Gen 1. For Gen 1, the aftermarket upgrade path is Comma AI.

can you please elaborate on why?
If autonomous driving is of high priority to you, there's no question gen 2 is what you should buy. For those of us who don't care all that much about it, and paid original price for our gen 1s, most of us can't justify the higher purchase cost. So, whether gen 1 or gen 2 is right for you depends on your personal priorities. That said, Comma AI performs well on gen 1. There are multiple threads on it. You can find those via forum search (and videos of it in action on YouTube).

Question 1:
Yes, if FSD type is your priority then Gen2 is what you'll want. For anything FSD related, a general rule of thumb is newer is always better since the computing and architecture is updated and more powerful. That said, newer generally comes with cost savings. Sometimes that's good and results in less complexity, more repairability, less weight. Sometimes that's bad and you lose things. These are very much YMMV.

Question 2:
NHTSA. You can check on Recalls and TSBs through that.

I would request the history data as a seller. Offer it as a level of honesty to the buyer. Such seems ethical and resonable.

To me, any Rivian that is not having excissive troubles is a great idea and smart buy. The most important issue is to get one that meets your needs or capacities. Issues to consider, charging at home, or where, need of open bed or the "S' version, Towing capacity, Quad or not, size of Battery likely goes into the charging issue. Used is a good option, there is a 12K mile R1S for $65K on this site! A good value!
