OK, I dont have anything to add to the AA/CP debate but...

bro. How are we supposed to have a big angry argument if you're up in here posting adorable cartoon moles?!

Asking for something for free is generally not a good negotiating position.

And this is proving my earlier point - CP is a zero value add proposition for Rivian if people aren't willing to pay for it because it's readily available for "free" elsewhere.

They have several years before there is any prospect of lost revenue from idle factories, during which time they can keep their heads down developing their own system before any potential day of judgement comes.

If they were to add CP/AA now, it would create more even demand, and given restricted supply they would need to raise the price to find equilibrium. So, it's naive to expect them to offer it for free, especially if it's as important to so many people as is being argued. Given that, either everyone pays more for a Rivian, or they could split it off as a premium subscription. But either way, they will profit from it.
This is a ridiculous argument. Not including CP all but certainly costs Rivian and/or its customers in opportunity cost—perhaps not monetarily for the latter, more so in terms of value and brand allegiance, but eventually it will cost Rivian some sales if they don’t have the feature. For many customers, if all things are equal (which they aren’t), they will go with the manufacturer who has CP over the one that doesn’t. For many others, they may even choose a lesser vehicle with CP than an otherwise superior one with it. The feature clearly has value, and at very minimal true cost to Rivian (a basic integration would require minimal software dev. work to implement—at least compared to the wheel reinventing they are currently attempting/failing to do).

I like my R1T so far, though it’s certainly not without its many quirks, head scratchers, and teething pains—but my number one daily frustration is no longer having CarPlay. I traded a 2022 Tacoma—with its anemic powertrain, terrible fuel economy, and mostly very dated design—and still have a 2002 Audi S4 with a CP capable head unit that I still occasionally drive. Neither are anywhere near the vehicle the R1T is in basically every metric, yet I sorely miss being able to easily access my phone from the screen right in front of me.

If (more like when) Toyota (or Nissan, GM, Ford, etc.) offers a compelling off-road capable mid-size EV truck with reasonable range, power, feature set, etc., I will seriously consider selling my Rivian if it doesn’t have CP integration yet. Of course there are other attributes I will compare, but at the moment, this is the one I am reminded of missing almost every time I drive somewhere.

How could you possibly argue that “CP is a zero value add proposition for Rivian if people aren't willing to pay for it because it's readily available for "free" elsewhere.”? If people like me consider lack of CP to significantly decrease the value of this vehicle enough to consider not buying or eventually selling our Rivians due to its omission—and with its almost ubiquitous status in the industry, we can safely assume CP will be available in almost every other vehicle, and only a matter of time before competitors will have viable offerings in this category—then that seems to be as clear an indicator as any that CP integration does add value. Stated another way: omitting CarPlay integration decreases overall value of the product more than the minimal monetary cost of including it.

I am amazed at the troll-like posts by people who likely have little experience using CP/AA or do not lead complex highly scheduled lives where CP/AA help enormously. My next meeting is in my phone, one click and its navigating me there, I join Teams calls from CP, CP reads my text messages and I reply without taking my eyes off the road, I play lossless music from my phone (even with no cellular signal), I have Waze and a host of other valuable apps. In 2022 CP/AA is a basic feature for new vehicles, like intermittent wipers or a/c. No OEM has or will ever come close to supporting the breadth of apps or experience offered by the iOS/Android ecosystems. OEMs have neither the depth of IVI software engineering talent to match Apple/Google, nor the global addressable market in the hundreds of millions to attract developer interest. I’m taking delivery of my R1T in the next month or two, and if Rivian maintains its current AA/CP position I will be swapping it out for a Lucid Gravity or something similar as soon as I can. Rivian will have lost another customer for good. Hell I can’t even play FLAC from a USB drive, no cellular data no music. Companies become great by delighting their customers, and no amount of technical excellence makes up for choosing to not hear clear consistent requests from many customers, prospective customers and journalists. For these old enough to remember: Lotus, Wang, Ashton-Tate and others dominated the productivity software market and all refused to hear customer requests for a GUI on the emerging Windows/MacOS platforms - in a decade they were all gone.

I forgot to mention that in my Raptor, once Sirius’ free trial ran out, I completely switched to CP. Not only for music (Apple Music) but for everything else as well (yes, even Maps).
This is the first vehicle I’ve done this with and I’ve had Sirius since it came out a million years ago.
Time change and people habits do too.

The underlying problem is that nobody wants to be forced to pay again for a worse version (when equivalent functionality even exists) of something they're already paying for. It's customer hostile by Rivian.

Even if Rivian got to the point where their offering wasn't significantly worse and missing functionality (not going to happen, as the economies of scale don't work for 3rd party apps), nobody is going to stop paying for their cell phone data plan because their car has data-- so they're still wanting you to pay twice for the same thing.

Zero customer benefit to the current situation, only benefit to Rivian-- which will only work for the duration of their EV truck monopoly. After that, they've burned bridges/given up a significant portion of their early mover advantage.

This quote near the end borders on bizarre to me:
“In order to do that, the user’s smartphone has to remain in his pocket when he gets in the vehicle. The minute he turns on CarPlay, or Android Auto, or Android Automotive, or anything else, the carmaker is in real trouble.”

I think it‘s a safe bet that the only reason most smartphone users would keep their phone in their pocket (not in a mount, placed in a cup holder, held in their hand, etc.) today is because of… wireless screen projection. I assume most adults with smartphones already spend significantly more time interacting with the screen on their phone than the infotainment screen on their car. Kids too young to drive are already lost to the automakers if they think they’ll convince future drivers to ditch their phones. Never mind that there are laws on the books to keep people from using their handheld smartphones while driving which don’t do nearly as much to discourage the behavior as screen projection does.

Beyond that, I think the premise that carmakers are going to lose out on the goldmine of transaction revenue is kind of preposterous. Whether in an old vehicle without CarPlay or a new vehicle with it, I pay for fuel the same way: with my smartphone or smartwatch. When I have an EV with plug and charge then I’m sure that’ll change because of the convenience. However, if automakers think they’re getting in on the action as soon as I step away from my car to make purchases at a convenience store, restaurant, grocery store, pharmacy, etc. then I think they’re collectively delusional.

Just to throw my own experience in the ring, my wife and I both preordered Rivian's, an R1S and R1T respectively, and because of the lack of CarPlay we'll be trading the vehicles in as soon as an electric equivalent is available.

I'm scheduled to receive my R1T this delivery window, and my F-150 lightning next year. The ONLY reason I'll trade is because of CarPlay.

My wife is scheduled for delivery next H1, and is keeping her fingers crossed for an electric Defender and will trade immediately. The only reason? CarPlay.

Hope Rivian changes their mind. We'd love to keep the vehicles, but we use advanced Siri Suggestions and other CarPlay features WAY too much.
