I navigated to a fast charger using the Nav but it didn’t show the preconditioning message. Does it only do that when it needs to but not always?

Did you look at the battery temperature? If it's not too hot or too cold then it won't precondition.

If you navigate directly to the charger it doesn't do it. It only does it when you put in the final destination and the nav adds the charging stop for you.
That is not correct. I almost never navigate through chargers and it regularly preconditions.

Interesting. Maybe Rivian changed this behavior. Over the summer on a road trip it was preconditioning for me, when i put in my destination and allowed the NAV to choose my charging stops. It was wasting energy and it wasn't helping it charge any faster so what i did was use ABRP and then i put in the address of the charger into the NAV... When i did that it never preconditioned.

Maybe your finding and selecting a charger from the NAV? In that case it would probably precondition since your directly selecting a charger.

Yes it's possible (even likely) that there is different behavior if you find and select a charger in the Rivian NAV vs manually entering the address.

You must be 30 minutes away or less. It turns exactly at 30 minutes when driving.

That also is not true in my experience. I have had it start pre-conditioning over an hour from the location, unless that has changed in a recent update.

Doesn't matter how I navigate to the charger. As long as it says there are chargers where I am going it will precondition.

It seems to me the pre-conditioning start would be a function of "how much" preconditioning is needed, not a specific fixed time duration. Exactly what variables are part of preconditioning is anybody's guess .... battery temperature, ambient temperature, current charge, distance to charger, speed, ....?
