The current functionality periodically attempts to yeet me across lanes traffic for no reason, randomly decides it’s unusable because of “no road information available” and seems to decide which segments of the highway are “hands-free” completely at random.

Rivian needs to catch up to the level of a 2022 Mach-E before they even think about full self-driving
OMG and on a recent road trip it was inexplicably adding 4.5hrs to a segment Apple Maps said would only take less than 45min. I followed Apple’s guidance via BT and not only does it provide better navigation it‘s voice guidance/prompts are more intuitive. Got to our final destination before dark. If we’d followed Rivian’s we would have gotten there after midnight!

As an an Android guy with a very strong aversion to anything Apple, I must say I do like the looks of this. Not enough to ever get an iPhone, but I might borrow my daughter's to play around a bit. I'm not too fond of the idea of a systems takeover of the car by Apple or Google or any other third party, but an interface that can pull data from the car in real time and also streamline infotainment use (at least until Rivian figures it out) would be nice.

Not trying to reopen a sore subject. Just FYI what the new CP can do and looks like. It can display variable data and information on both screens, like users can display maps or media alongside the power consumption rate and speedometer.

Edit: Added In-depth video from Top Gear:

Yes this is one of the outcomes of the Apple Car project, they had to make all the UI models for standard car functions so Ultra is that brand customized. -- it is great stuff and if you don't mind handing over control of your UI to a 3rd party its great. Very smart for AM as they never had good UI systems and most of them were way way behind. -- Pretty sure we will never see this at Rivian, they are 100% end-to-end hardware & software company.

Apple CarPlay Ultra would literally make the Rivian product line perfect. They’d be unbeatable.
The one glaring issue is it still requires a secondary device to operate properly.

As for WebEx, Zoom, etc… that’s up to those developers. Microsoft has Teams in CarPlay, it even had Skype years ago on CarPlay. It seems a lot of people have dated views of CarPlay and haven’t stayed current either from lack of use from their Tesler experiences or never having used it with an EV (given Rivian is keeping it from us). Next time you go to a SC get an EV from Enterprise that supports CarPlay like a MachE, Lucid, Polestar and try it out. It’s EVEN BETTER with an EV than with ICE.
Echoing this, CarPlay on the Mach-E isn’t “Ultra” but it’s pretty great. And – funny, given the early criticisms of Apple Maps – navigation in CarPlay is so much better than Rivian’s mapping, in terms of both routing and the overall UI. Can’t wait for EVPlay.

Going to have to disagree on this one.. Carplay in the Mach-E is not at all great. Passing of directions from infotainment to drivers screen is extremely limited and last minute which means you have to look over at infotainment screen (and even that only works for Apple Maps), there is no integration of car functions with carplay so you bounce in and out of an app, and on roadtrips the car only preconditions the battery if you use the native navigation system so you again have to bounce between apps and the native OS to do anything.

Just preorder EVPlay. It runs in "parallel with the Rivian UI. With a push of a button can swap back and forth instantly. Does both Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

For some reason I completely missed everything about EVPlay. Looks interesting, but for me that's a big chunk of change to put down on something that is still in such an early stage. I'll definitely be following the development, and see what people are ae to accomplish with it to determine if it's worth the investment for me. A lot of what's described seems like it would be more efficiently done on a laptop, so right now it's just the AA and media options that speak to me. And while those would be great, they're not $400+ great.
Even if it turns out not for me, I am happy to see that projects like this are being worked on, and I wish Alex all the best in getting this up and running.

Yeah, Rivian’s navigation progress is generally two steps forward and one step back. Rivian navigation has been suggesting this route over the last several weeks for no apparent reason:

Of course we ignore it:
Rivian R1T R1S Apple CarPlay Ultra First Look IMG_7904

As soon as the navigation realizes that we skipped the suggested detour it relents:

🤷‍♂️
