Rivian road cam saves a woman from false accusations.

Keep that hard drive plugged. I have accidentally unplugged it a couple of times. Once I let family take the car (because my kids were going with them) and they removed the cable to charge their phone 🤦
Wow, that's crazy!

A quick story about claiming cameras are undeniable proof - Red Light and Toll Booth cameras in Pennsylvania are confusing the letter O and the number 0, sending tickets and tolls to the wrong person. So Pennsylvania redesigned our license plates which now use a slashed zero. Oooops, now the cameras are confusing the slashed zero with the number 8.

DOH!

That woman was much nicer about this than I would have been. That cop should be put on crossing guard duty or fired For incompetence. What would have happened if she didn’t have Gary to save her?

geez! that officer was a totally incompetent a**! the video that was shared of his interaction with the accused doesn't paint him in a good light but it also doesn't do nearly enough to publicly shame him. someone should start a petition to get him fired and make a very public example of him and his sloppy work. while I generally have complete respect for our law enforcement officers, this guy does not deserve that respect and "we the people" need to make it clear that we won't stand for this kind of BS from law enforcement.

In our area depending on municipality, qualifications to be a LEO vary from a college degree in Criminal Justice to simply being able identify which end of a gun is the barrel. I guess like any career there are some completely unqualified people doing the job.

Have you read about the guy who got a "NULL" plate in California? He got tickets worth thousands from all over the state. Here is the story:

In late 2016, Tartaro, a security researcher, decided to get a vanity license plate in California that read “NULL”. He joked that with “NULL” on his car (and maybe his wife’s car reading “VOID”) their driveway would read “NULL and VOID.”

He chose “NULL” because in programming/database contexts it often means “no value” or “empty” — his hope was (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) that if a certificate or fine was issued against the plate “NULL”, maybe the system would treat it as undefined and he’d get away with fewer tickets.

⚠ What Went Wrong

For the first year or so, things seemed fine and he got no major issues. But then he tried to renew his registration online and ran into problems: entering “NULL” caused the DMV site to break / reject the input.

He received a legitimate ticket for not having the proper registration sticker — he paid it (about $35). Shortly after that, the cascade began: he started receiving dozens of citations from parking/traffic authorities across California for different make-and‐model vehicles, for offenses he had absolutely nothing to do with (sometimes even using dates prior to him owning the plate).

The reason: a privately operated citation processing center (and local authority systems) apparently used “NULL” (or empty/undefined) as a placeholder in their database when the license plate field was blank or not entered. Because his plate was literally “NULL”, the system interpreted “NULL” as his plate and attributed all tickets where the plate field was blank (or null) to his car.

Tried two different supposedly fast drives, system said they were too slow to be recognized. What’s the criteria?

This police officer needs to be retrained or fired 😡 When people speak of bad apples, here it is. 0 integrity or professionalism. On any other job if you sucked that much at it, you'd be fired.

I use this one purchased from BB. I prefer to buy some things in the store(not Amazon) to avoid fakes. People say that Amazon mixes sold by Amazon with goods from third party sellers.

Never had any problems.

To be fair to the cop, the 4 photos shown in the article (two for actual thief, two for wrongly accused lady) show two people who look quite similar. It isn't as obvious as the author states that they had the wrong person.

I'm not excusing anyone's actions but I can see why the police officer was fairly confident he had the right person.

There's a trick to bypass the "too slow" flag. @NY_Rob posted about it in this post. I got the error on an SSD that is plenty fast. I made the same edit to my text file and have not had an issue since. I'm guessing there may be some other bottleneck in the system during its test and it attributes the slowness to the drive, then flags it as "too slow."

The sad thing is that, outside of filing a complaint to put in his service jacket, there's not much you can do about this. Police are allowed to falsely accuse and arrest anyone in this country, and they frequently do so. They can hold anyone for a certain number of hours without charges to "investigate" the crime. Some of this is necessary for stopping actual crimes, but this is clearly shit investigative work and room-temperature IQ reasoning.

This is why you should never discuss a criminal act with the police without a lawyer present. Oftentimes, demanding to be represented and having the money actually to get a lawyer is enough to prevent oneself from becoming a victim of this sort of thing.

I use an SSD, and it works much better than a flash drive—basically, a newer technology computer hard drive in a USB-C enclosure. Mine is 1TB as well.
