Electric vehicle maker Rivian said on Wednesday it plans to open a new artificial intelligence and autonomous driving research hub in London, marking its first facility in the UK.

The California-based company said the office will focus on advancing its autonomy and AI capabilities, which underpin features such as its hands-free highway driving system.

Rivian described the UK as “rapidly becoming a world leader in artificial intelligence engineering talent,” and said the London team would help accelerate its product roadmap.

“We’re incredibly excited about opening our AI hub in London and attracting leading talent,” said James Philbin, Rivian’s Vice President of Autonomy and AI.

“The work the team will do in the UK will accelerate our plans and ensure our vehicles remain among the most technologically advanced and appealing on the road,” he added.

Interesting. I hadn’t really reflected on the fact that Rivian can shift more and more to Europe if the U.S. keeps becoming increasingly hostile to EVs. First an AI hub, pretty soon battery plants and factories.

But why in London?
My brother in law is a film producer. About 15 - 20 years ago, they started using London based CGI studios for post production work due to cost, great talent, and easy to work with. I suspect that Rivian has made this decision for the same reasons.

AI talent and innovation is not limited to brains born in the US, and current administration policies are causing the global "best and brightest" who work in AI to not come to the US.

Not trying to make this political, it's just a fact that the current administration's policies are damaging the advancement of science, technology and medicine.

I think it’s more likely that James Philbin is from the UK and wanted an excuse to go there

The capital “O” in “open” from the title had me thinking for a while

There are quite a few online articles about London/UK actively growing the AI business. I think they saw what happened in film post production and this is the logical evolution.

Article
"The London AI Hub has officially found its home in the heart of Farringdon. Developed by Techspace, this groundbreaking partnership establishes a new epicentre for AI collaboration and innovation and cements London and the UK in the race for AI dominance."

Medium
"Everyone talks about San Francisco & Silicon Valley as being the go-to places for artificial intelligence, and sure, there’s plenty there, but there are other cities that offer their own unique perspectives and boons to AI. London’s AI scene isn’t talked about enough, even though it’s home to many world-renowned AI organizations, including Google’s DeepMind."

nvidia
"U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s ambition for Britain to be an “AI maker, not an AI taker,” is becoming a reality at London Tech Week.

With NVIDIA’s support, the U.K. is building sovereign compute infrastructure, investing in cutting-edge research and skills, and fostering AI leadership across sectors.

The U.K. is a global AI hub, leading Europe in newly funded AI startups and total private AI investment through 2024. And the sector is growing fast, backed by over $28 billion in private investment since 2013."

As someone who made the trip over the pond the other way ~10 years ago - fully agree.

Cheaper labor than USA, and bigger pool of talent than other European (or in this case ex-EU) cities.
Won’t really be cheaper if the dollar continues to fall. USD is down around 9% to GBD in the last 6 months.
