I'll put my results in here when I have some, but I think the most important temperature measurement is battery temperature.

It could be 40 degrees outside but if the battery is 65 degrees the efficiency will be substantially better than if the battery is at ambient 40. This could happen if your garage is warm but the outside air is cold when you start the trip. This will be my situation regularly in the winter.
I agree that the battery temp is critical. The problem is it is a parameter that we can’t manually adjust (I don’t even think we can toggle the pre-conditioning on/off manually unless we put in a charging station). So IMO, probably the biggest contributor to battery temp is ambient temp.

I've been a bit puzzled over that too. The Gen 1 Quad has AP and Conserve modes. I wonder if the EPA is a blend of the two. Gen 2 Dual is essentially always like the conserve mode on a steady speed drive like this. For purposes of clarity, I've only included data where I used the Gen 1 in conserve to compare to Gen 2.

I will add in that my vehicles have the standard Pirelli OEM road tires. 21" on the Gen 1. 22" on Gen 2.

Another note to add. The heat pump on the Gen 2 appears to provide no efficiency benefit.

The biggest variable in a study such as this on a diverse forum is terrain. My numbers would pull this study way down - I have a ~700 foot elevation change from home to work, and I would have to drive 90 minutes to be on a suitable flat road as a "standard". No, downhill regen does not make up the uphill extra energy usage.
That’s totally fine. I am still curious what efficiency you are getting based on your terrain. Plz post šŸ˜€

Thank you for posting it again. My first time seeing it. A couple questions about ur graph just so I am interpreting it correctly: 1) what is each data point represent (eg., the first graph, R1T gen 2, you have 11 data pts on the graph, is each point a trip taken at that particular temp for 165 mi)? 2) is your R1T gen 2 data from All-Purpose mode?
Each data point represents the efficiency from one entire trip. I have a vacation home in northern Wisconsin I visit frequently from the Minneapolis area.

The data is the efficiency reported by the Trip A odometer in the Rivian UI at the completion of each 165 mile trip. It is reset to zero when I started each of the trips.
Gen 2 data is the All Purpose mode which means it is running front motor only for the vast majority of the time on a trip like this and would be very similar to the Quad conserve mode.

I can't get myself to drive efficiently and would skew your number way down. Bought an ev because of 835hp and I try to use a lot of it whenever there is an opportunity šŸ˜€
Same. Love to pass people on rural roads. Can't seem to driver 65 let alone 55 on I-5 in urban areas.
Exception would be when I'm trying to hyper-mile for drive to my son's house a little north of Seattle which is about 227 miles.

I am a new owner but a long time member in this forum. So I should know the answer but I think keeping the truck plugged in will warm the battery, especially if you are charging. I need to do research on just how the truck preconditions, but I think you can warm the battery before a drive when the ambient temperature is cold.

Good to know! Nice data (coming from a scientist šŸ˜†) demonstrating the singular effect of temp on efficiency. It looks like 60°F+ is optimal for reaching the EPA range/efficiency. I am saving your graph for my own reference.
