Ford Fathom EV Pickup ($28,350 Starting Price) - News & Info

This may be a direct threat to Slate but it is a threat to Rivian R1T as well. This Ford truck will likely be in the same size category, and even if they end up charging $60K for a bigger battery/longer range version this is a direct threat to Rivian. On the plus side, this may push Rivian to update the R1T quicker with R2-like tech to bring the cost down. I doubt they would call it an R1T Gen 3 because that would instantly make higher cost used R1Ts unsellable. More likely the R2T with about the same capacity. Now reading my own words, I suddenly feel like the R1T is at a dead end.

Doesn’t matter that it’s LPF. What matters is what they’ve done to make it work even in the cold.

And if they don’t, then it’s going to be a massive failure and turn off another massive group of potential buyers from EV’s. Here’s to hoping they figure out what Rivian didn’t when it comes to LFP.

Through my ad biz eye, Ford is blatantly targeting folks who’d love to own a R1T but can’t afford one.

You are not kidding. Uncanny is the word. Would not shock me if the board room discussion was not at least somewhat influenced by Rivian.

Quite honestly, with no R2T in sight, this may actually end up being a great move by Ford.

That kind of makes my point. If one can get essentially the same capability for $20K less then this will draw people away from Rivian. Sure they won’t get the air suspension, ultra-high HP, more luxurious materials like wood, and as frequent OTA updates. But I’d argue for most Americans these aren’t the things that says “I’ve got to have a Rivian”. Ford will have a vehicle that can tow, haul, accommodate 4-5 people, and have enough acceleration to feel sportier than the ICE counterpart, no doubt. Plus a service model where the dealer is local. Also, many are already comfortable with the Ford eco-system. Don’t kid yourself. This will take sales away from Rivian.

I think it’s unoriginal of Ford. But also not unexpected. This also means Rivian will not waste resources on a R2T, however unlikely that is to begin with. R1 sales data has already shown them the path towards profitability is paved with SUVs.

Nah. They’ve always answered the question with “possible”. Which is a non-answer. Anything in business is possible. The difference maker is if there is a business case for anything to become justifiable.

No, that;s an atypical Ford design - smooshed crap. Of COURSE, that $28,000 model won't be released. If it ever gets released, the first model year will be Super Platinum Wagu Ranch Limited Edition at near $60k. And like the Maverick, it ill sell well for the first 4 weeks of launch, then sales will plummet because "...people have lost interest.".

I hope... I hope... I hope... my snarky predictions prove wrong; that Ford actually produces a well constructed, well designed, moderately priced mid-sized EV pick-up truck. The market needs it. But I have zero confidence that Ford will do anything other than try and push over-bloated garbage onto the masses.

Did you mean to type "typical" and "Lightning?" The Maverick seems like it's continued to sell pretty well.
