Sure. I keep my EV cars for 100k miles. But I know many people who lease cars for 3 years, put 30k miles on it, and then get a new one. Battery after battery after battery.

Exactly people who really care about the environment and not just presenting themselves like they care don't buy new cars or anything else every few years, they buy once and keep it running forever. And they certainly don't buy Rivians when they could have bought a much more efficient EV if they really cared that much to be preaching to others.

Make cars great again! Can someone drop an EV drivetrain in a late 90s 2 door Tahoe or Bronco Eddie Bauer. I'd buy both of those!!

For me, that is the absolute truth. We really want to buy the R2, not because it's a high tech EV, but because it's an SUV that has no equal today.

I really think Tesla blew it with their Cybertruck. Had they made the body in the shape of a "conventional, boxy" SUV (like the R2), the line for them would still be long...

Let's hope that the R2's reliability will be good enough to thwart any negativity that it is currently generating. I'm due to order mine December-February (according to Rivian). Can't wait!

A Rivian driven in West Virginia has the same carbon impact as a 40 mpg vehicle. That's the worst grid in America. What does the average half ton average? 18 mpg?

Replace every one of them.

I'm tired of hearing them, smelling them and seeing the wars fought over oil. 40% of all traffic on the world's oceans is just oil & gas moving around. It's gross.

There is almost no situation where driving a gas car is better than simply swapping it for an EV. Until we have 100% EVs on the road this holds true. You can figure that all out with 3rd grade mathematics.

Once we have 100% EVs, then it starts becoming a net loser.

The average kWh is generated at 430g of carbon in the US. That was 550g of carbon 10 years ago or less.

Oh gosh. 4mpg impact just for driving? Not including battery impact? I thought we were doing better. Oh well.

Like I said, no high horses here. I love and drive both ICE and EV (solar powered). I just know everything is not black and white.

Easy.

There is 8,887g of carbon in a gallon of gasoline.

Let's use a 20 gallon gas tank on a vehicle that gets 20 mpg as the "gas car".

That's 177,740g of carbon used to drive 400 miles in a gas car.

The average kWh generated in the US for 2025 produced 414g of carbon.

177,740 / 414 = 429.

How far can you drive on 429 kWh?

My Dual motor Rivian = 1030 miles.
A Chevy Bolt = 1700 miles.


That battery had additional carbon associated with manufacturing to overcome, but it generally gets zeroed out around 15,000 miles. Everything after that is bonus.

I actually find my i4 much more enjoyable on twisty roads than even a manual transmission. One-pedal driving means I can focus more on pushing it to the limit and not have to lift my foot off the gas or shift.

I get that, I prefer a DCT/PDK for track use. But the i4's weight, numb steering, subpar brake modulation (for sport driving), and relatively slow turn-in make it a point-and-shoot car, not a dynamic driving experience imo. No hate. I really like the i4, driven it many times, as my brother has one. I'd take one over any Tesla.

Back to the Rivian R2 and Bronco. I found the R2 steering dead compared to my Gen 1 R1T and had hoped for better off-road capability, but I know those aren't most buyers' priorities. I would take a Bronco every day for off-road use. I'd wager even a Bronco Sport Badlands would outperform a stock R2 off-road. Less clearance, but that twin-clutch rear is really well tuned, and it has better underbody protection.

My new car isn't getting thrown in the garbage when I sell it in a few years. It's going to someone who had the choice of a used EV or a new ICE vehicle. No idea why anyone like you will choose to overlook this.

His argument is valid with regard to the Rivian. It's an electron guzzler compared to smaller options.

I have solar on my own home that zeros out about 75% of my home & vehicle carbon, but I could have done better and covered close to 100% with a Chevy Bolt. I'll have to live with that shame.

Same with ICE. The point is, total life cycle of the product regardless of how many owners.

More to your point, perhaps we shouldn't buy so much stuff and hang on to things longer. Oh wait, that's not what feeds the consumption machine
