The picture of the 18's look good and there's a wide variety of tires that size.

I think I'll go 20's for road trips/summer and 18's for winter/off road.

*I'm worried about replacing a tire if I'm on a road trip, how many places will stock a 21" replacement tire?

Absolutely not. 20" all the way still. I'll put Michelin AS on them once the factory AT wear out if needed.

this was mostly done to be able to capture the $7500 federal tax credit for higher priced vehicles. The new Y was originally put into the "standard vehicle" category, which has a maximum price cap of $55K. Tesla appealed and a couple other OEM did too and the EPA changed theirs criteria for SUV to allow this and a few other cars into the "SUV" category, which had an $80K max retail price to still qualify for the full $7500 federal tax credit.

The other OEM were Ford and GM, which had the Mach-E and the Cadillac LYRIC (GM) platforms coming out or in the market, so everybody won something.

Historically the SUV category was based on WEIGHT and INTERNAL VOLUME and some other criteria., but now we'll it's all the whatever ppl want.

19" is the smallest Rivian tire offered but there is a thread of someone putting 18" on their R2.

To each his own. 21s look too good to pass up for my 95% street driving. I found the 20s too bouncy around town during my drive.

I think I'm going to get a spare as well but that limits your speed and range of you're using it. If I'm on an extended trip I don't want to wait days for a tire to be shipped and then installed. Though I guess you could always buy a wheel and tire or two to get you back on the road.

The 21's have better range and people will probably buy them because of it but the tire selection and availability is poor, at least right now.

I really like this car, but these are potential deal-breakers for me:

1. The reliability of a very early-production vehicle, on top of Rivian’s poor reliability record in general

2. Worse real-world efficiency

3. A/C performance combined with the glass roof’s poor heat protection

4. Questionable seat design and comfort

5. A potentially problematic navigation system and no CarPlay

6. A potentially significant drop in resale value due to obsolete hardware when Gen 3 replaces it

7. The likely need to sell it before the warranty expires because repairs could be extremely expensive

8. The high price for a car that does not offer great range, especially when I could get a Subaru EV for much less with dealer and California discounts, almost at a used-car price

Your concerns are real and if I was in your shoes, I would move onto something else or at the minimum, wait a year to 18 months before buying R2.

Makes sense, much like how ICE vehicles have gotten bigger and heavier to avoid EPA ratings.

And to be able to be categorized into the fatty class >6Klb, for full single year write offs for lease or any business/1099 categorization.. (although, I think full expensing in the latest whatever made that moot)

I'm going to buy a spare and SHARE the SPARE with other local R2 owning friends to have on road trips (we'll split the $ between 4-5 local owners.

But... Idaho is a bit far away ;-)

I one of those exceptions as I will be taking it shortly after pickup on a LONG roadtrip. Also taking it to remote trailheads, offroad (within reason of course!) and even having an iKamper on the roof which will reduce efficiency. I should probably record it given the thirst for information and to quell the concerns people have about various aspects of range and efficiency.

Good to watch this before taking it offroad

These tests coming out recently are making my wife and I reconsider the R2 after being excited to order.

We test drove it we love it but we also do 220 mile road trips once a month to see family going at least 80. If this can't even do that in one shot it might be a deal breaker. I was now being asked to find an alternative that's not a Tesla.

I just don't get why they didn't put an extra 20kwh of battery in this vehicle like bmw did with the IX3 or IX5.

I get it, but it’s comical to me. A 5 minute charging stop (if needed) in each direction is a deal breaker? I’ll happily spend 5-10 less minutes with family (especially if it’s the in-laws!).
