You do not need to complete the steps to get a vin or delivery date. You do need to complete the steps a few days before your scheduled date or they will reschedule. VIN assigned 6/24, completed all signatures and steps that day except insurance and payment. Got my delivery appointment later that day for 7/15. 7 days before I uploaded my insurance showing it starts on 7/15, 5 days before I uploaded an image of my check to complete the steps. 4 days before my delivery was bumped from 7/15 to 7/19. Reason was a delay in the train delivery, they are supposed to get the vehicle at the SC on 7/17 and need time to prep.
Awesome, appreciate the confirmation!

And you haven't heard anything from Rivian? No email/text from an advisor? Nothing?
Nope. No proactive communication, but I started a chat and the last known location was that it was "on rail" - so, putting the pieces together that all my completed forms are "in review" - I'm pretty confident my service center isn't processing my forms until they physically have the R2 on location. I wonder if this process is handled differently depending on the service center. Like they each have a different appetite for the 'risk' that might come from processing forms before having their hands on the vehicle? Or perhaps, if a vehicle is on a truck rather than train, then that prompts them to process the forms.

You can start a chat in the support center to see if there is a holdup. Only step I needed approval was the payment step, the others all went fine. It would not let me click save/continue after uploading check image. Started a chat after a few things with AI it connected me to a person who approved the last step.

How soon after receiving your vin did you get your delivery date? I've completed all of the purchase steps besides the insurance, looking to set that up once I have a date. Did you have to complete every step before receiving your vin or just the finance/delivery portion?
I think this is somewhat dependent on the delivery team (individual). I received a VIN but have been told my delivery won’t be scheduled until the car leaves a rail hub which I’m assuming would then allow for a more reliable ETA.

I have been asked to complete all other steps including insurance, finance and trade in pictures, etc.

That is all complete and the only remaining item is the payment of the cash down and actually having the car scheduled for delivery. The delivery team is hoping to be able to have an ETA early next week.

shoot, I have a delivery scheduled for monday and I still haven't heard a peep from rivian, I have reached out via phone and email to my service center multiple times over a 2 week period and haven't received 1 phone call or email back. It's scheduled at a brand new SC that just opened so I am giving them the benefit of doubt, but my prior R1 pickup experiences were completely different from a communications standpoint (rivian was VERY good at communications prior).

I ordered yesterday and they already assigned me a pickup date for Saturday, which doesn’t quite work because it takes at least 3 days for my bank to get me the funds. App doesn’t let me reschedule. The number that texted me earlier is no responsive. I called customer service to reschedule and was told I’ll get a call back… these people are stressing me out!

Did they happen to send you an email? I had gotten an email and a text for the initial instructions. The email was much more responsive than calling or texting.

I have been in contact with the delivery team at the SC I am picking mine up at. they told me the same thing as others have said, date will be scheduled once hits rail depot. They told me target 7/31 to 8/7. completed all steps already and nothing and nothing is in review.

I had the automated email that said to click the link or email [email protected] to reschedule. The link didn’t work.
The texting person(s) responded eventually and got me rescheduled to next weekend. I’ll be picking up the day after my birthday 🎁

All these recent posts are very helpful. I tried to get some information from one of those Rivian YouTube influencers but they didn't respond.

The only steps that were open for me are Title/Registration, Delivery Method, Trade in, Rivian Care and Insurance. The others are in an 'Upcoming' state and not unlocked yet. Which is probably good as many of those steps require having a more definitive pick-up date. I can't get insurance until I have a date to make it the effective date.

Still waiting on a more defined ETA. Right now the estimate is end of July/first week of August. Curious how backlogged their transportation logistics are in Normal as it seems that the number of R2s in the lot keeps rising.

My delivery is this Saturday the 18th, one month from VIN to Delivery. Just received word today that it's arrived and they need a couple days to complete PDI. Given the low VIN, I suspect that a majority of that time was shipping logistics. I got a delivery date scheduled 3 days before delivery (i.e. offered a schedule after it had arrived).

I don’t think the issue is necessarily in Normal. I think the issue is in the rail yards where vehicles are loaded and off loaded.

Truck transportation is much easier to coordinate than rail. Rail lines have strict schedules due to shared tracks between freight and passenger usage. Rail capacity is much more difficult to scale up and down. I’m sure the hardest part for Rivian is getting the needed rail capacity to get cars where they need to be.

My delivery team keeps telling me “as soon as we see it leave St. Louis we will be able to schedule delivery”. That tells me the car was trucked from Normal to the rail yard in St Louis to finish the journey West. And it has been sitting in St Louis for at least 3 or 4 days now.

I think you are right. Most of us, myself included, are just being a bit impatient and want that immediate gratification so we are searching for reasons why things are not moving as fast as we want them to.

I will say though, regardless of whether the issue is at Normal or at the railyards, it is a problem they will need to solve as they can't afford to have the backlog get too large as that will put pressure on the service centers as well to process deliveries faster. I think I was the first to report an over 3XXX VIN and I've already seen reports of 4XXX VINs within 3 days of my VIN being assigned. Production is moving at a steady clip, the rest of the outbound logistics down the line need to keep pace.

Definitely an issue, unfortunately it is one Rivian has little control over and I have to imagine it is probably one of their top priorities right now.

The biggest impacts to rail capacity are some changes to CDL requirements which has taken drivers off the road and tightened trucking capacity thus increasing OTR rates. And as we all know, increased fuel prices have also increased trucking rates. Either of these factors on their own drive companies to seek alternate modes of transportation from traditional OTR trucks. That means rail transport.

The rail industry has seen one of the biggest increases in usage since pre pandemic. For Rivian this is a perfect storm because not only does it mean it’s harder to find capacity, but even when they do find it, the delays at the rail yards are significantly greater than normal. Increased rail usage in a system that hasn’t been updated for decades is just a recipe for disaster. The rail system appears to be overloaded in every way imaginable and it’s creating worsening bottle necks.

Rivian just needs to start offering a small discount for factory deliveries to alleviate the problem. Kidding but not really.

For me it's less impatience and more concern with how the process is handled - Rivian encourages getting through their steps as fast as possible, which I did, meaning last week the trade in valuation was given, the contracts were written and signed, my credit union has sent them their check, and insurance has started. All of this is at Rivian's request pre-delivery. The issue is when pre-delivery can mean "you get your R2 tomorrow" or "you'll have it in a month."

Seems weird, at the very least, to let me drive thousands of miles in my current vehicle, when the norm for Rivian is trade in values are only good for 2 weeks.
