New Rivian story at: https://stories.rivian.com/r2-sustainable-materials-june-2026
R2 Sustainable Materials
25%
Vehicle mass made from recycled or bio-based materials
93%
Post-industrial waste used in the roof appliqué
85%
Recycled content used in the front trunk
50%+
Sustainable content used in all Adventex material
99%
Reclaimed ocean waste used in flooring face
93%
Recycled steel and iron used in the brake calipers
99%+
Interior textiles produced from recycled packaging industry waste
“As our first vehicle designed for high production volume and the mass market, R2 represents a tremendous opportunity for us to achieve impact at scale. Our selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and powertrain design make R2 Rivian’s most responsibly built vehicle to date while opening the brand to millions of new potential drivers.”

Director, Product Sustainability, Rivian
The Adventex Advantage
One material we’re particularly proud of is our second-generation Adventex, used to replace legacy leather-wrapped seating. This comfortable, durable synthetic material is derived from byproducts of the wood pulp industry, with materials sourced from responsibly managed forests in Nordic countries.
In partnership with a third-party auditing company, we verify the sustainability of these materials and monitor their environmental impact, meaning you can expect class-leading performance without sacrificing quality or conscience.
Scaling Responsibly
And while responsibly sourced materials are an important part of the equation, they are only one of many decisions that determine the impact a product may have. For every vehicle Rivian makes, we develop and publish a life cycle assessment (LCA), where our teams follow a rigorous methodology to determine the carbon footprint of a vehicle, from raw materials to disposal. The R2 will have a dramatically lower carbon footprint than our first-generation R1 vehicles. You can learn more about Rivian’s LCA reports here.
