Just poorly worded on my part. I meant have the electrician come back when the charger arrives to complete the job.
Ah. Yeah, availability of the electrician and additional costs for a second visit could be a concern. But agreed, it's an option.

If you have a March / April delivery window of this year, you shouldn't be chatting general CS. Talk to your Guide instead. My Guide was very clear to me that delivery is not dependent on the wall charger. It would be nice if they proactively communicated this though.
Guide? What is this guide you speak of?

I have a March/April delivery window and no Guide contact yet. I'm guessing I'm not alone, since I haven't heard anyone past the January-February delivery windows mention Guide contacts.

I ordered the Rivian EVSE, but I have a 14-50 outlet already installed. I prefer to have a backup option if the EVSE malfunctions.

Pretty sure most march or April delivery windows don't gave a guide yet.

I’m a March/April delivery and I do not have a guide. I haven’t been contacted by a guide.

I can’t believe how poor my CS interactions Have been recently. I asked them where any completed/open RAN chargers are located. They responded with nothing more than hope I have a great day. Then I asked about how changing my LE color from Rivian Blue to Launch Green will affect my window. They responded with saying in early 2022, there will be a tracker added to the website. Finally I asked if the future off-road bumper and winch would be compatible with the Launch edition. I was told the off-road package was standard on Launch Edition and there is no winch.

I have given up on reaching out to Rivian.

FWIW, my Guide has repeatedly told me that the winch could easily be added to my LE after delivery. I would assume that would be the same for any off-road package equipped R1T.

Thanks for sharing. This is helpful. Still having sufficient details before (not after) we make a choice is important. For example , I am only interested in the hooks. So if the hooks can be added later by purchasing it from Rivian store for $1500, I add the off road package to my configuration before taking delivery. If it can be purchased for $100, I won’t. There are a lot of other info like some of the differences between Explore and Adventure, R1S 5 seater vs 7 seater, ………. that Rivian has but it is not shared. We have choices to make but not sufficient info to make them. For me personally it does not matter as much since my window is in 23 and I will likely get some of that info from the rest of you but some of the folks that may be getting theirs in a few months, having to flip a coin for an $80K purchase is a bit uncool. At the end of each chat you get a chance to say if your concern is addressed. So system is obviously equipped with tools to make sure that question is answered properly the next time it is asked but that rarely happens. Rivian having some of this info, paying CS to interact with us and not be able to do their job is simply mismanagement.

Man these therapy sessions really work. I do feel better. Thanks for letting me use your couch.

Depending on the charger, "installing" the EVSE could be as simple as plugging it into the wall outlet. My understanding is that >=50amps (which the Rivian charger is) requires that it be hardwired but many (the aforementioned Juicebox 40, for example) can be plugged directly into a 220 outlet in most instances. That's the way my current charger is setup.

I'd say a plug-in 40 Amp EVSE gives much more flexibility than a hardwired 48Amp unit. You will get a slightly higher charge rate on the 48Amp unit, but in real world daily use it is negligible. A plug in unit is end user swappable, most people wouldn't feel comfortable rewiring a hardwired unit themselves and would require paying an electrician.

Besides an ~33% slower charge rate, are there other drawbacks from using a 14-50?

It's more like 20% charge rate reduction for 40amp. 48amp installation would also cost more and require an available 60Amp breaker vs 50Amp for 40Amp charging. Charge rate must derate the circuit size to 80%. 14-15 outlet really gives flexibility to change out chargers as well as quickly switching to the included charger in the event of a failure. If the wall charger is hardwired, you'd be SOL and have to charge on 120v, which is approx 3 miles per hour of range gained!

Not in any practical sense.
  • If you are going to be plugging and unplugging the unit constantly, most 14-50 receptacles aren't really designed for that.
  • The cheap Leviton receptacles have a known problem where it's hard to torque the wires correctly, and have been known to wiggle loose (and melt the plastic or catch fire). So make sure you or your installer gets high-quality receptacles.
  • You can not use more than 80% of the rated current for a receptacle constantly, which means you have to run a 50-amp circuit for a 40-amp charger.
That's about it. I also think for home use, it makes more sense to have a plug instead of a hardwired charger. It's so much easier to deal with issues, upgrade or replace broken connectors, or swap to your mobile charger if something goes wrong.

You can even use that outlet for other things if necessary.

I ended up buying two of the Tesla J1772 wall connectors when they popped up a few months ago in anticipation of getting the Rivian to add alongside my Model S. What I liked about these is they can share a circuit, as I only have 150 A service to the house. So they'll limit automatically, which is more than enough for our use case. And I can leave both vehicles plugged in all the time if I want (which is a really good habit to have, just set the charge limit and forget about it).

I've converted both of them to plug-in using stove pigtails, and I'm using sockets on the wall. This means I always have the option of plugging in the wall charger instead if something goes wrong with them.

(As a side note: using a J1772 connector with the Tesla is only mildly annoying. I bought an extra J1772 adapter from Tesla, because I wanted to leave the one it came with in the car. I ended up taping it onto the wall connector, because otherwise it requires two hands to remove. The one thing we lost is the ability to click the button to open the charge door, which is only rarely annoying, since you can just tap the door to open it if the car is unlocked.)
