Semi-Stupid question......Will you guys put togethor a "custom spec" vehicle by swapping accessories around?

Say I want a Tri-Motor/Max pack 1st gen R1T with 20in AT's, and roof bars. Is that a thing that, if you don't have that "on the lot", then you'll swap around components (wheel/tire package + accessories - not battery packs or motors) to make happen?

Those are great pics! Just curious how do you handle charging on-site? I don't know if this "is a thing", but if it was me I'd ask Rivian to add a RAN to your lot. Make it free for the dealership, reduced price for customers, and normal charge for folks just dropping by. Or something like that?

And if you're ever able to become a secondary source of replacement parts, I'm sure the handier portion of the owner community would be happy to see it—if Rivian allows it. Right now, it's either Rivian SC or salvage/eBay.

Sounds good! While we can't order parts for resale, we do have full access to the Rivian Service Portal and Rivian Parts Catalog. We only use OEM parts directly from Rivian for any repairs not needed by the Service Center (Wipers, cabin air filters, etc.)

A question we get all the time is: why does a Volkswagen dealership in Virginia stock so many Rivians?

The answer is simple. I kept seeing owners share poor buying experiences from all over the country. Rivians being sold by dealerships with little product knowledge, unnecessary fees added on, and overall processes that didn’t reflect the quality of the brand. As a die hard Rivian enthusiast, that didn’t sit right with me, and I wanted to change that.

We’ve been known as one of the area’s leading Pre-Owned EV dealers for years, and I personally was an early EV adopter and currently own 2 R1S's. I’m genuinely passionate about Rivian, and that drove the decision to build one of the largest and most curated Rivian inventories in the country.

While any dealership can buy these vehicles at auction, we approach it differently. I personally handpick every Rivian in our inventory from across the country to ensure we have the best condition, best specs , and widest variety in the market. Currently, we have around 60 Rivians in stock, ranging from 2022 Launch Editions all the way up to a 2026 Quad Max with just a few thousand miles.

BLUF: Based upon my recent experience with Steven and his preowned Rivian sales team at Lindsay VW Dulles, I found everything Steven said above to be 100% accurate which sets them apart from EVERY other preowned Rivian sales option including Rivian itself!

LINDSAY KEY DIFFERETIATORS BASED UPON MY EXPERIENCE:
Below is a summary of what I found to be Lindsay's key differentiators of the preowned Rivian buying experience.

• Largest preowned Rivian inventory in the VA/MD/DC/PA/DE area BAR NONE! Usually, 50-60+ available on any given day with new ones arriving weekly with 2-3 ones being sold daily apparently.
• Rivian-specific knowledge by Steven (Preowned Director of Sales) and his Rivian-specific sales team who are certified to sell Rivians; i.e. not all the sales people at Lindsay can sell Rivians since they aren't *certified* to do so. Steven and his wife both own Rivians and Steven previously owned I think he said like 3 Teslas. He said he convinced Lindsay ownership to add preowned Rivians a while ago and they listened to him. The only thing I found that Steven didn't know was that Maryland residents couldn't buy preowned Rivians from Rivian directly, which he said was going to definitely be used for future marketing purposes, When I came back to purchase my R1T two weeks later my sales guy Marvin said there was a big discussion that week about that fact. Again, BIG difference between buying from a Rivian enthusiast himself and his Rivian-certified team than ANY OTHER dealer.
• Only the BEST preowned Rivians are hand-picked by Steven specifically which are mostly quads and several with powered tonneau covers which was one of my requirements. When I asked if it was a *working* powered tonneau cover, he said if it's not then they send it to the Richmond SC to get it working because they don't sell any w/o ALL working parts.
• Vehicle prep is second to none. When they come in, they go to the Richmond SC for any repairs, warranty work, OTA updates, etc. When I test drove a CarMax R1T (see down below), the first thing that popped up on the dash was the prompt to install an OTA update. If CarMax can't even install a simple OTA update during their supposed *prep* then what kind of prep are they actually doing? SMH
• Steven was able to share with me the Rivian Service Center history of one of the R1Ts that I test drove because I wanted to confirm that it had alrady had its dual 12V batteries replaced due to my R1S ownership experience with the five 12V battery service calls in 2 years! At least CarMax does get that information let alone share it since I asked the CarMax sales guy when I test drove one of theirs. That said, the actual R1T that I ended up purchasing was in such good shape from the original owner that it didn't need to go to the Richmond SC, so Steven didn't have the Rivian Service Center history to provide for that one but w/ a build date of 6/22 I'd be shocked if the dual 12V batteries weren't replaced already.
• Excellent value pricing. I spent three weeks researching available preowned R1Ts in the MD/VA/PA/DE area w/in 200 miles of my home and I found Lindsay pricing to be BELOW what others offered which makes me I feel like I got a GREAT deal! The 2022 R1T with 15k miles on it that I purchased from Lindsay was priced at $56k with one previous owner, zero accidents, and with an interior and exterior that was in better condition than my 2023 R1S that I just totalled (see below) with 62k miles for which the insurance paid of fthe $58k! MANY other preowned 2022 R1Ts in the MD/VA/PA/DE area had MANY more miles and were priced significantly higher. The only ones that I found priced lower had been in an accident and/or had interiors and/or exteriors with significantly worse condition.
• Salespersons that actually are willing to WORK for YOU. Sure, not every customer is a previous Rivian owner who has very specific requirements (e.g. pre-3/23 build date w/ two 12V batteries and 12V powerpoints in the frunk and under the dash) like me; a.k.a. an unapologetic p.i.t.a. ;-). That said, since Lindsay is a 4+ hour round trip from my home, I didn't want to come all the way down there and not get what I wanted. Kudos to my sales guy, Marvin Sanchez who I HIGHLY recommend that stayed in contact w/ me (although not annoyingliy so like many other used car sales guys from other dealers) from the Saturday that I test-drove the first R1T to the Saturday two weeks later after my R1S was paid off by the insurance company and I was ready buy after test driving a second R1T. To save time on my final trip by helping me narrow down the dozen or so potential R1Ts on the website that met most of my criteria to just two by going out in the lot and confirming my requirments on the specific R1Ts.
• Extensive details of each vehicle on website. No other website had as many detailed photos including the door sticker w/ the build date on it which was very important to me since I wanted a pre-3/23 buid date with all the stuff that Rivian took away to save costs. Most other dealer websites did not offer free CarFax reports per verhicle. The only room for improvement of the website would be the ability to filter on a few other specific details including powered tonneau cover and wheel size.

BACKGROUND: On 3/2/2026 I totaled my 2023 R1S with 62.5k miles on it which I owned since 6/16/2023 having preordered back in 2/2021. Needless to say, I can attest to the R1S being a VERY safe vehicle to drive based upon the three accidets that I experience in my 33 months of ownership (none of which were my fault) the last of which involved bouncing off a jersey wall several times going 65mph! See the following sad sight:


So, while I was waitng for the insurance company to officially total my R1S and then pay off my credit union auto loan, I started researching my preowned Rivian options, since the new Gen 2 quads are about $40k more than the preorder price I paid for my 2023 R1S including the $7,500 tax credit that I got back then and I can't see paying $120k+ for a daily driver especially since my commute is 100+ miles/day 5-6 days/week for the 31k+ annual miles that I drive.

The other major reason why I wanted a preowned Rivian R1T is that I had already put down my $100 reservation last year for a Scout Terra BEV and didn't want to buy anything new for the negative equity it would bring when I went to trade it in, although given the recent revelation that 87% of the 160k Scout reservations are for the EREV models 97% of which are for the Traveler SUV, and their annoucement that initial delivery is pushed back until late 2027, we'll be lucky to see a Terra BEV delivered before 2030.

OTHER PREOWNED RIVIAN OPTIONS: The first place I looked for a preowned Rivian R1T was of course rivian.com where I quickly discovered yet another reason to HATE living in The People's Republic of Maryland; namely, Rivian cannot sell preowned Rivians to residents of several states including Maryland even if you wanted to purchase it out of state! WHY especially since they can sell NEW Rivians to Maryland residents!? SMH.

Second, I checked CarMax since I knew they sold preowned Rivians and I had an excellent previous experience with selling my 2017 Audi Q5 to CarMax who offered a better price than the local Audi dealer. Using the carmax.com site I literally found one Rivian in a CarMax about 75 miles from my home. I found a few more spread between some CarMax locations in VA, PA, and DE about 150-250 miles from my home. One in particular I found at the Potomac Mills, VA location which prompted me to pay the $99 transfer fee to have it transfered to the White Marsh, MD location which is closest to my home. A week later after it arrived and they *prepped* it, I test drove it and found it lacking condition-wise (several exterior scratchs and the spare tire hatch didn't pop open when you pressed the button since the shocks that raise the lid were inoperable. Also, the sales guy was nice but clearly didn't know much about EVs in general let alone Rivians specifically. I set an alert on the CarMax site for any additional R1Ts that matched my criteria w/in a 250 mile range but only got one other alert in two weeks.

As far as other dealers in the MD/VA/PA/DE area, I only ever saw one or two at any other dealers and usually you had to pay for the $35+ for their CarFax report.

Personal Vehicle Update!

After 45,000 trouble free miles, I just upgraded from my Gen 1 Rivian Blue R1S Quad Large to this beautiful Midnight / Ocean Coast Gen 2 Dual Max Performance with Sound & Vision!

No doubt that I will be missing Rivian Blue and the power from the Quad. However, am excited for 400 miles of range, Autonomy + and the Matrix Headlights!

In debate on powder coating the wheels black and doing a chrome delete. However, the bright package is starting to grow on me more than I thought!
