Anyone know how many cars Lucid is producing this year? I'm to lazy to check at the moment.
As of 11/15/21 they had 17k reservations across its 4 models. Their plan is to be at a 90k annual build rate by end of 2023.

As a developer, that's not scalable. CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy for companies to get their apps into your vehicles without much effort. Take Audible for example, you think they have the man power to devote an entire team to understanding Tesla's app creation system (if it existed), then turn around and also learn GM's proprietary development process? Just doesn't seem scalable.

AA/CP shouldn't replace or even be the center of a car infotainment system, it's should just be a means of users to get the apps that they have on their phone easily integrated into the infotainment system for ease of use.
Are you just flat out ignoring that bluetooth is a cross platform compatible option?

Are you ignoring that bluetooth is only for audio? Some people want Calendar, Audiobooks, Podcasts, Their own navigation maps, etc. Bluetooth only gets you lower quality audio. Nothing for a UI that developers would want. Hence why AA/CP is in nearly all new vehicles.

It's been a while since I've used either of these products, but, aren't these both audio? And low quality audio?

You're right, my bad. Makes sense as to why it's a completely unpopular feature that not many people use.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/29/apple-carplay-massive-success-paves-way-for-automotive-entry.html
And teenagers give other teenagers shit because they don't have a blue chat bubble.

Carplay and Android Auto both got popular because they were better than traditional infotainment systems. Most of the automaker's systems in the carplay/AA era are still complete garbage. I don't need to use my car like I use my phone, but the infotainment systems still need to be a lot more car focused than they are, that includes AA and Carplay.

@frostbit3, that is a good point that by including Carplay/ AA isn't mutually exclusive of having an awesome UI tailored to the specific vehicle systems and brand. I'm guessing here but I doubt it's difficult to include CP/ AA. If your native UI is preferable over CP/ AA by the end user they simply won't use CP/ AA. My guess is it was excluded so a native system could be a source of subscription revenue.

AFAIK Tesla has sold millions of cars without CarPlay. In the future when proprietary infotainment is as well integrated in other cars as it seems to be in Tesla (not an owner, but have driven some) we may look back at CarPlay and Android Auto the way we now consider in-dash CD changers. And my 2020 Ford has CarPlay and I use it a lot, so not a CarPly hater.
Tesla had the advantage (it was a risk, at the time, but in hindsight it's a clear advantage) of being the ONLY choice in the segment. As competition heats up, "not having a feature" becomes a larger and larger issue.

Rivian won't be the only EV truck for long.

The other issue is that CarPlay, by itself, isn't actually the sticking point. The issue is that there are features that people want, and CarPlay is an easy/fast way for a manufacturer to meet them. If Rivian wants to create bespoke apps for everyone's preferred music streaming services, as well as implement all the killer features people want in their own nav, then great! That sounds amazing! Then CarPlay doens't matter. But they're not going to do that. And as much as you may think CarPlay is mediocre, I'd say a mediocre implementation is better than no implementation.

Ding, ding, ding. I am so over this forced selection, let alone paying for it.

Irony for me at least, is that the forced subscription and proprietary bs that it comes with, engenders significantly less personal loyalty than if the provider simply allowed us to use our chosen phone linked and paid for services.

@Trandall, I also completely agree with your comment about the vehicle producer providing a superior UI which again the consumer should be able to choose compared to their other options rather than having it shoved down our throats.

Sorry, I am now cut off from any further mini or maxi rants for the month of Feb.
