The most obvious reason for waiting until the bells and lights stop, and the arm comes to a stop all the way up, is that you can't see (and often can't hear) a train coming the opposite way from the train that just passed. This can happen at almost any multi-track crossing.

One of a railway engineer's nightmares is the pedestrian or vehicle that crosses just behind another train and proceeds straight into his/her train's path.

Since these encounters are usually fatal, and often gruesome, the human impact on the engineer and family is enormous -- to say nothing of the impact on those who are hit.

I wasn't there, and I can't judge -- but the railroad may not be liable even if the arm's descent was unexpected.

Glad you're safe, @Fmc! Very best wishes!

I just got mildly side-swiped by a tow truck driver--their side toolbox door flung open as they braked on my passenger side and it whacked my rear wheel arch. I immediately tried to hit the drive cam save button, but it was not there. When I looked further, it had been switched off from one of the updates, even though my SSD was still attached. So check regularly that it remains on for when you need it!
I had this happen before too. Truck was in service, and the recordings were turned off due to service mode, they didn't turn back on automatically when I got the car back. Same day, someone gives me a door ding hard enough to tear through the 8mil ppf. Ugh.

Yes. The arm lifted then it came back down as I was halfway through the crossing
Like, aren’t you supposed to patiently wait for the crossing arm to completely lift AND the red light to go out BEFORE attempting to cross? Asking for a friend.

This thread made me realize that I haven't come across an active level crossing in decades. I don't know if it's because of where I go, or that trains are not a big thing, or what. Growing up it was a daily thing.

OP, you stated that it was a brand new crossing, so did you stop and get photos of the fallen barrier? It might have had some kind of issue causing it to abruptly drop.. Either way, it should be reported, seems to be a safety issue to me.

Yes..I reported it to the port. But of course nobody takes responsibility. The port says the rail owns it, the rail says the port owns it. Obviously nobody cares

Nah just like when a red light turns green so you hammer it and t-bone someone. I'd love to see the footage of the malfunction...

Yes..I wish I had footage..also I am the person who is honked at for waiting 10 seconds at a green light. I am not sure if it is my city or everywhere but red lights are no longer even a suggestion. I wait patiently because someone will run the red light.

I stand corrected then. Maybe you'll luck out with paint transfer and some type of PDR fix if you go that direction.

A train crossing arm lifted then fell on my roof. Is it worth repairing or just ignore it?

Depends on your deductible for comprehensive. Luckily no glass damage, but I'm sure it's a couple 1Ks.
