Some level of noise and vibration is normal. I feel bad for the folks that live where it's normally pretty temperate. It's normally pretty loud here, especially if you have defrost on.

Yes, this is very normal, at least on my Gen 2. I even get some initial vibration in the steering wheel when it is running full on. It dampens out after the compressor settles down.

There are numerous post on this topic. One recent post even included an audio file.

My Gen 2 tri gets the steering wheel vibration and a rather loud humming noise. Lousy engineering. Ridiculous in a $100k ride.

This vibration and noise occurs in our 2026 R1S Dual Max Performance too. Here is a video of it. The noise shows up as a vibration in the steering wheel too. Along with several other noise and slipping steering wheel issues, I have added it as an issue to my Rivian Service Center ticket. Had the appointment for three months and taking it in tomorrow. We took delivery of our R1S on Sept 30, 2025. We will see what they say.

Please post what the SC says. Given how common it is, they may say that it is normal. But it would be good to know if there is a remedy. BTW, what is a “slipping” steering wheel issue?

Thanks!

Listening to your video, that sounds about normal. On our 2025 R1S Dual Max it typically goes away after a minute or so. Honestly, I haven’t played around with it too much. I just don’t use the HVAC that often. We are now in our second winter of owning the R1S and the winter temps have been so mild the heater hasn’t been needed. Usually the butt warmer is all that is need. Didn’t run the A/C much even though the summers tend to be pretty warm.

The steering wheel slips downward slightly with a bit of a thunk after it moves and sets at the beginning of each drive. Here is a video.

Have the loud fan, as well, but am considering it SOP for the vehicle. Interesting, you can barely hear it from inside the cabin.

Oh that. My steering wheel does that as well. I’m not sure if it always did it or I just started noticing it 10 months into my ownership.

I had a really odd thing happen back in August or September where the vehicle forgot I was the owner. When I got in the vehicle, it acted like the day I took ownership. The app had to be set up again and the keys assigned and all my owner settings had to be redone. RIVIAN helped, of course, and since it thought I was a new owner, I got another two months of Connect+ for free. It was after this event that I started noticing the steering wheels final positioning “clunk”. It doesn’t slip on its own. After it arrives at its saved position, you have to push down on it a little bit for it to happen. I guess I’ve just gotten used to it. If you bring this up at your SC visit, and they have a remedy for it, please post. I would really appreciate it.

I will pay closer attention to my R1T. I had issues with the digital key roll-out. My phone does not support it, yet still wants to put a digital key on the truck. I lost the use of my card key for a few days as a result, and had to have the service folks redefine the key back to the truck. I have also noticed that "clunk" when going from "easy access / parked" to seat position. Again, I just considered SOP for the mechanisms moving the parts around.
