I’d say we all are winning with all of the choices we now have. 4 years ago we had nothing in this category.
And all together, far below 10% of total market. There is plenty of room for everyone to win. Like actually win. Not the other kind of winning that we're supposedly sick of.

As much as I enjoyed my R1T, I would probably buy the Siverado EV if I were to do it again. The superior range and larger size of the cabin and bed are big selling points for me. The Rivian's bed was certainly big enough for many use cases but I found myself wanting a larger truck bed on many occasions. I also like that Chevy offered a pass through (mid-gate) for the bed, into the cab.
Can confirm - it's more usable. Bed is huge. Range is huge. Google Maps is pretty great. Plug and charge for everywhere (including a Tesla, Ionna, EA) is nice. Lower load floor for the frunk is surprisingly convenient. Truck drives smaller than it should due to 4 wheel steer.

Rivian is still a nicer place to be (except for a very meh ventilated seats) and the gear tunnel is exceptionally useful.

Update cycle is absolute dog water. You really have to work to "find" a good, EV friendly dealer.

Captain Obvious would like to point out that there's no good news here. Hard to explain it away in any sense, despite some valiant attempts herein.

And I'm still a first gen R1T fanboy.
There's no bad news either. Given their price point, and how well the R1S sells I think Rivian is selling rather well. We all know the R2 is the make or brake moment regardless of what the R1 series sells. R1's sell more than Tesla does the S or the X at a similar price point, and to me it's obvious why as it is a better car.

I'll say it's a bad thing. It's stupid and shortsighted. All about profit next quarter, but who cares if we are out of business in 10 years, thinking.
Its not shortsightedness if the inventory is not turning over at the dealerships.

Ford or any automaker cannot continue to build if the dealers cannot sell them at a profit and the dealers are not buying them from the manufacture, nor can Ford continue to heavily subsidize/discount to move the inventory.

It would be shortsightedness if the demand is healthy, which it is not.

And time and time again, short-sightedness have proven to be the downfall of many businesses. Ford and GM knows better.

Biggest issue I had with my R1T was how small the back seat it. Its barely wider than a Model Y and had less leg room. F150 Lightning has a huge backseat. When my lease is up in 2 years going to have a hard choice between R1T and F150 Lightning (if its still being produced).

Agreed, the current system (especially western world) is extremely short sighted....but it's the one we live in and when played well, is rewarded by the market. There's no doubt in my mind the future of light duty vehicles is electrified, the writing is on the wall. ICE's will be around for a long time though, squeezing out every last drop of profit they can.

There's more at stake than whether or not EVs make it. I agree with you, they are a forgone conclusion at this point. What automakers are dealing with now is whether or not they will be around to see that future. Some of them won't be, because of decisions they are making today.

I agree, and taking a financial hit now (i.e. Ford, GM, VW) is smart to get the process down so that when costs come into alignment, they are positioned to really take advantage of the transition. Rivian just needs to hang on and hopefully the R2 is cash flow positive and can keep them afloat. And maybe, the R1 will become cash flow positive also. I hope so because I love my truck and I plan to get another one in three years when this stupid lease ends.

The R1 platform has been positive at least once - then the economic environment changed (wonder how that happened.....)

I vaguely remember hearing that R2 should be gross profit upon launch, but I might also be making that up. That being said, RJ has sounded confident in many recent interviews that the vehicle will be in a good place financially, even at launch.

I say this with a grain salt, but based on my talks with some Rivian folks, sounds like Rivian will do some slight update to the R1 line year that include faster charger times and some other updates. Does not sound like they are letting them fall to the wayside like the Model S and X.

I think with an 800v architecture and rear wheel steering, the R1 could be back in the game.
