Just to see, I submitted a trade-in request on my 2025 R1S Dual Large with post-purchase Performance upgrade to Rivian to see how big a gap I'd have to a Tri or Quad. Note I purchased the R1S in Feb 2025, just under 7 months ago and have less than 2,500 miles on the clock.

I'm not looking to sell, and given the pitiful trade-in value I'm definitely not considering an upgrade. This is worse than Mercedes S class or BMW 7 series depreciation. It's brutal. Might be luck to go straight up on a R2 -- if they launch in Q1 2026. After that, doubtful.

Over 50% of its original value? That is better than most EVs. Specially Mercedes. I know its not great, but just the reality of the current market. EVs and luxury cars have bad depreciation, mix them both and you can get a used Porsche Taycan for literally half the price a year later. As a personal example, we bought a Mach-E a little over a year ago for $47k and are getting $24k for the trade in value for what is essentially a "like new" vehicle.

Horrendous for new buyers, but an absolutely bargain for those in the used market. On the bright side, if you want to buy a used tri in a year or so, it will probably seem like a steal.

Are they giving you credit for the performance upgrade? If the lookup is just automated by VIN, would it be using the original config?

You'd think they should know what options are on the vehicle - activate pre- or post-sale.

If memory serves you lose the most on a cars value in the first year. Why are you shocked? Cars aren't an investment but an expense. If you re buying a vehicle because you want value out of it buy a CIVIC.

Too small. That's why I'm still running my 2008 Honda Pilot which I bought new at end of model year and end of body style for nearly 25% befow sticker ;-)

Exactly why I leased my r1s. Depreciation on my r1t was a hard pill to swallow.

Just curious, if you are interested in getting the most value for you vehicle why would you look to trade it in? Trading it in is always going to get you the lowest returns because it is essentially a wholesale price. You are paying for the convenience of walking away without going through the effort to sale it yourself.

KBB does not have enough data to give you a price on a 2025 but a 2024 with identical specs and mileage shows 85k for the mid range on a private party sale.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
YMMV - I got an 80k offer for my '25 S to trade on a '26 T. Guess what I'm picking up on Saturday ...

Why is it surprising to people that cars at this price point depreciate like a rock thrown in a pond? It is this way for anything expensive. Cars are not investments.
