Is Rivian R1T a 1/2-ton truck?

I'm going to try to tow an articulated boom man lift JLG T350 like the one in the picture home. It's five miles on a flat road. I think it weighs around 3800 pounds. The store I'm renting it from says I need a 1/2-ton truck to tow it. I know EV trucks are different from regular ones. Is my Rivian R1T equivalent to a 1/2-ton pickup? I'd like to be able to tell the rental person I have a 1/2-ton truck without lying.

It's more along the specs of a 3/4 ton pick up - payload is 1700+ lbs and towing capacity is 11,000 lbs. The Rivian will laugh while towing that lift - "That's all you got for me?!?!?!!?!? HaHahaaa!!" Seriously, as long as it is hooked up correctly, you will barely even notice that you are towing it.

I rented a mini excavator from Home Depot and they had similar requirements, but no one asked when I got there to pick it up. I can't imagine they would give you any trouble unless they are just totally clueless.

You could tow two of those without coming close to capacity. You’ll be good. With that said make sure you’re wearing a harness and are clipped in on that lift. Those little lifts are bouncy.

ChatGPT says it's a 3/4-ton truck based on the GVWR. But imo, I would say it's more like a "midsize" truck (Chevy Colorado, etc.). 4.5' bed, no ability to attach a 5th wheel, smaller cabin than "standard full size truck", etc.

When it comes to towing and towing capacity it’s well beyond a midsize truck. It’s midsize in physical dimensions, but not in towing capacity.

Try google.....Rivian R1T is classified as a 3/4 ton truck (thereby exceeding any requirement for a 1/2 ton truck)....

It’ll tow that just fine. It’s absolutely not on par with a modern 3/4 ton though. It’s definitely on par with modern 150/1500s though the features suck on the truck compared to more conventional pickups. While they may have similar payload ratings that far from the whole story. I’d never choose my r1t over my diesel for anything other than a small trailer or a trip close to home.

By now, I am sure they have the Rivian in their systems. I rented a lift back in late 2022 and the guys really didn't know how to handle it. They didn't turn me away, I just showed them the specs and they were fine with it and just entered under a different vehicle type. But I imagine all their rental systems are connected and Rivian would be in there now.

This came in at about 7k lbs and we towed it a few hundred miles in the R1S.....you will be more than OK!

I buried most of my pride while trying to "fix" a retention ditch that the county suddenly decided was not deep enough 3 years after they approved it as just fine. I would venture to say it was actually fun UNTIL one of the rubber tracks came off the excavator

3 hours of cursing and Youtube (and 2 additional trips to HD) later I got that bastard back on just in time to return the machine on time! (to the same HD)

lol, that's all but identical to my tractor towing rig! Mine's a red R1S and red Case DX33 compact tractor with 3 pt backhoe.

It tows like my 3/4 ton. And word of advice, know that stuff and confidently go and hook up and tow. It's got a class V (5) receiver on it for Christmas sake.
