Just so strange. I won't accuse him of dishonesty but I'm not aware of any other examples of him reviewing a manufacturer-provided vehicle under controlled conditions, let alone one that isn't even being delivered yet.

In his first Hummer preview he was talking shit about how it would beat the Rivian to market and the Rivian wasn't even real, and now here we are with Rivians in garages and the Hummer still a prototype, and he's publishing reviews of the latter. Not the choice I would make in his shoes.
Yeah, despite getting the same final Doug Score, there is a clear difference in the excitement level of the two reviews.

I wrote it off after seeing that they got nearly the same Value score, but yet that was his closing piece about how it costs so much. I think he solved for the 73 overall on that one. There is just no reasonable argument for that spec Hummer being of equal "value" as the R1T.

Hummer EV 1st Ed. 114k (+possible dealer markup)

Max Pack R1T 85k

30k price difference

That's a 35% price premium over the R1T.

That's in line with comparing a fully loaded Maverick to a fully loaded F-150. Doesn't seem like a real apples to apples kind of review.

And again the optics of Doug posting this video so abruptly on the heals of the MT Truck of the Year news, with his demeanor and ultimate Doug scoring being a little bit off from what he's done in the past (R1T as an example) all under the direct supervision of GM on a prototype car? Come on... Doesn't sit well with me.

Needless to say Motor Trend had a team of reviewers, people who are actually professionals in the industry and fans alike, as opposed to Doug Demuro (who I do respect). They came to a different conclusion, and I honestly think that they did a more thorough review and analysis of the vehicles free of any overriding supervision of General Motors staff.

I'm not saying the Hummer EV isn't a cool vehicle, but let's be honest, General Motors can't even give you any real details on what the entry-level, and other trim tiers will be. The thought of dropping $80,000 for a super stripped down Hummer that only goes 235 miles seems like a joke considering the top-of-the-line R1T is 85k.

Golden Calipers say's it all.

Sorry GM

Hummer is going to start at less than $80,000, once we get through the launch edition cars (which are already all sold).

I’m thinking I’m probably going to get the Hummer instead of the Rivian, primarily because it has CarPlay and homelink. Rivian is really pissing me off with the deliberate gimping of their car to push their subscription service. Really killing my desire for the car.

$79,995, okay "under 80k ?

A also GM has SC subscription for the Hummer EV, so unless you pay the subscription fee certain features on your vehicle are going to shut off and not work. Supercruise being the primary one.

Subscription services are unfortunately going to be making their way into all brands and manufacturers (GM was OG with OnStar). The proverbial fragmenting of our cars and features like our TV watching.

But if you want all the features he was describing on that Hummer you’ll easily hit over 100k, as they did not include most of those party tricks on the 80k version, I canceled my Hummer reservation once I saw that. Other reasons too, like just flat out came to my senses too.

As his reach on Youtube has grown he has started getting more opportunities to review unreleased vehicles. Before, he would often rent cars through Turo or get together with some dealership. Now, he gets access to newly released and soon to be released vehicles, even if he can't drive it, through manufacturers. His Bronco review was through Ford, as was his Maverick review and F-150 Lightning review. He also recently reviewed the new Range Rover...but it was a pre-production model. Same with the Rimac Nevera.

Ultimately, I just think he is trying to smash in all of the current newsworthy electric vehicles around the same time. Over the past couple of months he's covered the Model S Plaid, R1T, F-150 Lightning, Lucid Air Dream Edition, Hummer EV, Mach-E GT, and Rimac Nevera. He often previews a future electric vehicle review at the start of a previous electric vehicle review while he's talking about Cars and Bids.

I'll also add that Doug's camera angle almost certainly intentionally excludes the passenger seat in his reviews. I'd be willing to bet he isn't alone a lot more than people assume. A dealer rep being present isn't the same as "controlled conditions", but still....

Weird, is there an echo in here?

It does have a subscription service, but having CarPlay and homelink means I don’t care. I can not pay and the car will still function as I desire (e.g. open the garage door).

Anyone else wondering if he releases a 2nd video where he only takes the Hummer off road, like he did for the R1T? Or even just regular roads with a stop sign or traffic light? My guess, probably not, but I hope he does, he should go on the same stuff he took the R1T. TheSmokingTire seems to take off road vehicles they test on the same course over and over, which they admit does change some over time.

Do we have any actual evidence that the garage door opener on the Rivian is subscription-gated? (Or any other specific features?)

It requires an internet connection, which means your car needs a data plan, which means you need to be paying for their service.

Crab walk seems like it would be extremely useful for parallel parking.
I originally thought this too, but then I watched the video - NOT even close for parallel parking in my opinion. Rear wheels turn only 10 degrees.

I walked away after watching the video thinking "parlor trick". BTW, I have same impression of Tank Turn.

If the wheels turned close to 90 degrees and the truck that had sensors that could detect how much room a space had, yes, it could be useful. But in real life, good luck finding a spot a full size truck can parallel park in. To me, crab walk (and tank turn), seems like a party trick, with no real world applications, or at least, extremely limited real world applications. I have only gone off-roading with my Jeep a handful of times, but have never thought or considered how crab walk or tank turn would be useful on a trail.
