Just sounds a bit staged. Could have been what happened, but we can blame FSD all day long but also doesn't change the fact that the human behavior here doesn't seem to have an ounce of logic either.
So somebody staged this - for what reason? And then to have a reportable police incident that their insurance company will find out about? And to pay for a lift wrecker to recover the vehicle? You've got quite the imagination going on there...

The fire chief probably just went with what they were told. Highly doubt they went into the vehicle and did the analytics to confirm it was in self driving when this happened.
This is nonsense. Do you believe the moon landing was staged as well, because this sounds like the same level of conspiracy theory? This is a mistake that no sober human would make, so the simplest explanation is that FSD did this and the driver wasn't paying attention which is the natural consequence of using such a system. That is the most plausible theory of what happened here.

Let's assume that the vehicle made the turn at 15 mph. That's 22 feet per second. If the driver was not paying attention in the turn and realized it on the first rough bump (and potentially the vehicle was accelerating at that point after the turn), 40 feet is less than 2 seconds to react and bring the car to a stop. Completely plausible.
This math makes sense, but only if there was a road running parallel to the train tracks. And your reaction would be delayed because you think it’s turning onto the road.

There doesn’t appear to be a parallel road (per the pics provided). So as soon as the car began making the left turn at the railroad crossing (which this scenario also suggests much slower turning speeds), the driver should have had plenty of time to react and bring the vehicle to a stop prior to driving 40-50 feet on the tracks.

If this accidents gets national attention, then we’ll find out once Tesla releases the vehicle data.

Oh ok got it. Good to know. I'll probably buy a Tesla now so next time I do something stupid with it, I can blame FSD and then throw my hands up and be relieved of all consequences. Good thinking!

It’s certainly not staged, but it could have been human error and their first reaction was to blame FSD because they wanted to avoid embarrassment or attempt to avoid liability. It would not be the first time this has happened and was later debunked by vehicle data showing FSD wasn’t activated.

Could be to get an insurance payout and get a new Tesla upgraded to HW4 or to switch to a brand that doesn't have the Musk stink.

The NHTSA says otherwise. Argue with them if you feel the imformation is wrong.

To be fair that is a HW3 vehicle that is constrained to an earlier version of FSD than HW4 vehicles. So you may wish to understand there are rather large differences in performance between v12 HW3 and v13 HW4 versions and even between v12 and v13 iterations.

You can’t even compare it to what Rivian has because they’re not even playing the same game at this stage. Driving my gen 1 Rivian feels like driving an ICE TBH. It’s quaint and interesting with no more promises of future updates forthcoming.

There are plenty of people using FSD these days with little to no drama even if it still demands regular attention. I can attest it is far safer than any other system I’ve ever used.
Tesla advertised HW3 as FSD capable and I bought the lie.
Now they say HW4 is FSD capable but there are still problems occasionally.
Tesla is handicapped by Musk's refusal to acknowledge the limits of vision only driving.

I'm not familiar with FSD, so it could take me a good bit of time to figure out how to stop FSD if it involves anything more than pressing the brake.

Blame the victim.

I love how many Tesla fans turn into Alex Jones when confronted with facts that contradict what they have been sold by Tesla.

"Oh that was the OLD HW3 system", as if that wasn't sold as the solution when released and it's not like they are now being told to not use it....

"Oh that looks staged", as if it's a surprise that selling something named "full self driving" and lying about it's true capabilities for years wouldn't convince people it's safe to use.

The excuses just keep getting more ridiculous by the day.

I can't wait for these same excuses to be rehashed when HW5 comes out, speaking of HW4. Especially if Tesla puts additional sensor technologies in.

If you think this is what I said then you need some reading comprehension lessons.

It's exhausting. I can't recall any other vehicle manufacturer getting away with this type of lie for so long.

Pair the referenced incident with this video. This seems to be a common issue
