I own both a Gen 1 R1T and Gen2 R1S.

I would not pay money to upgrade the Gen 1 to Gen 2. Gen 2 had some decontenting and material downgrades which are *NOT A PROBLEM* but if you are used to Gen1 you'll notice. All versions of the stereo are better on Gen 1.

The suspension improvements on Gen2 are, IMO, overstated.

The ADAS systems in Gen 2 has more runway for sure, however, *RIGHT NOW* I prefer the Gen 1 system as it is less naggy. The Gen 2 will yell at me to look at the road even when I am looking at the road, and its distracting to try and get it to stop complaining. Gen 1 I just leave a finger on the wheel and it works.

Interface responsiveness is pretty close. Gen2 does have DRASTICALLY reduced motor whine. Steering is lighter on Gen 2, so vehicle feels more floaty (may be a S v T thing).

I was looking yesterday just out of curiosity. All prices in CDN.

My pre price increase Gen 1 '23 Quad was
105.670k Vehicle and accessories
15,987 taxes
Total 121,657 CDN

A Gen 2 Tri motor (similar performance to the OG Quad) same paint, same off road options/accessories
188,075k Vehicle and accessories
65,514 in taxes inclusive of 17,000 luxury tax
Total 253,589 CDN

Canadian taxes suck, don't get me wrong, but just looking at the difference between the clear bargain my Gen 1 was, vs the 131k additional cost for what amounts to a few improvements, and a couple downgrades, It would be a difficult financial pill to swallow/justify.

Really curious what would happen with my GAP insurance should my R1T be totalled. My GAP coverage is good until March 2030.

Is Rivian now starting to charge the luxury tax in canada?

I don't know. When I was looking 2024 lightly used quad R1S were going in the mid 70s at reputable dealers. If there weren't G2 changes I would have gone that route. We got our Tri for 98k by doing an immediate lease buyout. So about 25k more for us.

This is the most expensive car we've ever owned by far and wife and I agreed that we are keeping it for at least 10 years. Hoping the updates along with the current decline of new EV models will help to resist the urge for something new and shiny over the next ten years.

Go to your bank, withdraw $30,000.00, put it in the Gen1... park it next to a Gen2.

Now... pick one.

Answer will be pretty obvious.
That was funny, you’re not wrong, but that was funny.

For me the thing that made the upgrade worth it was the tri and the max pack. Pushing 400 miles of range on the freeway and the rear wheel power bias of the tri motor make it all the way the truck I wished my gen 1 was. The gen 1 was 80% the perfect truck for my use case where the gen 2 is 95%.

That extra 15% might not be worth it to many people but to me it was. I guess it depends on how much the 30K is worth it to you. If it's worth approaching perfection and smoothing out the gen 1's rough edges then do it. If not, the gen one quad is still a great truck.

In AP mode, how many miles/kwh are you getting on the freeway? Im being told that 1.7 at 65mph sounds about right, and that for 2+ I should be in conserve - which kinda blows my mind based off the gen1 quads I’ve got experience with.

I have the 22 street tires and I'm getting 2.4-2.6 in AP and more in conserve. Assuming the weather is doing it's part. For example right now, I'm doing that all day. Winter time is less. Rivian claims to have improved efficiency over the Gen 1 quad and in my experience that is true.

Thanks - my truck is the exact same spec as yours only a T rather than an S.

I’m going to double down on my challenge to them, that when I go to pick up the truck (or they drive it back down) that I’d like to drive 30+ miles next to the loaner R1T (quad, 20” ATs) - as I’m seeing 2.1 on that during my typical commute, whereas the trimax was doing 1.6. (Our R1S dual with 21s is typically in the 2.2 range for the same journey). For some reason though I’ve discussed this a number of times with them, I just get given graphs showing there is no excessive vampire drain….

Depends on what you value. You did forget the headroom Gen2 has for assisted driver features - will be hands and eyes off at some point. Gen1 is never getting that.

If I road tripped a lot, I'd value the driver assistance stuff, but I don't, so I don't.

All said even with the headroom, for me, its not worth upgrading to Gen2. Rivian has reached out a couple of times asking if I'm interested and there are great incentives but I paid $73k for a new Quad, AT 20", underbody shield, Ocean Coast, Meridian sound system, tonneau, and Launch Green color which would cost over $100k.

Weather-dependent is a huge thing. I see snow in your profile picture; When it's cold, the efficiency goes way down. Where I live is a highly moderate climate. When it's 70s and sunny or warmer, that's when I'm getting that efficiency. Fortunately for me, that's around 8 months of the year here.

I am in the process of trading my 23 R1T Dual Performance lrg for a Demo 23 R1T Quad 70k . Love my Dual however I wanted the Quad when I purchased the Dual. I was very close to going through with the tri but it was like 104k. My my Dual is paid for. It came down to 12k Quad or 40k+ tri easy choice for me.

Would love to hear your comparison after you get the quad. I had seriously thought about the dual performance. When I was looking to buy, they cost about as much as the quads I was looking at. The warranty was a lot less as well. The new Trimax was at least 45k more than the quads at the time. The quad made the most sense all around for me at the time.
