Hello,

Last Saturday after spending a nice afternoon in SF with our 3 dogs, we piled back into our R1S 2025, and the brake was super hard, we couldn't start the car. Software restart only made the battery show 0%It had 149 miles still and we only had to go 20 to get back home. We called support and they offered to tow the car and gave us Uber credits so we could go home. Luckily the Uber driver didn't mind our dogs.

Rivian serviced it in the following week and replaced the computer module.(this is the second time). The first time they replaced it was the same week of picking up the new Rivian and the computer restarts messed up everything and the cameras stopped working.

Its been driving fine now but 2 incidents since getting the new car especially the second involving the brake really made us nervous. Is this happening more often? Yesterday I was driving around but quite nervous if the brakes can fail randomly?

We have more problems when both of us are in the car with our Rivian apps and the car is always confused about whose profile to pull. It was really scary and has us worried now about safety issues. We were lucky to be in a busy SF downtown area where we could get help. and not stranded on a highway.

Sounds like a 12V failure. The brake booster is electric boosted, so if the 12V fails, you will lose power brakes and the pedal will be very hard.

Typically, if you're going to have issues, you have them right away, and once Rivian gets it dialed, the problems cease. I don't think these vehicles are inherently unreliable; the issue is more with initial build quality and consistency. Trouble-free usage is not an unrealistic expectation based on my personal experience with Rivian. I've had a Rivian since 2022 and 50K miles on the platform. All of that has been trouble-free.

@HaveBlue That didn't happen to us because we couldn't start to Rivian but if we had somehow been able to start it we may have had that same issue. Very, scary!

Yes its sorted for now. But given this was a brake issue we feel very nervous about driving around and reading that other thread reveals such issues can actually happen.

the other post was mine. Yes - I can't trust this vehicle and will find a way for Vivian to take it back. Mine has been to the shop 12 times. Losing brakes at highways speeds with your daughter in the car is scary. My wife has an R1S and only minor issues but she knows about the emergency brakes in case it stops working, so very important to remember. Keep us posted if yours ever does it again.

You had a power problem, not a brake problem. If you had been able to power up the vehicle, the brake booster also would have been powered up and your brakes would have felt normal. No need to fear brake failure, this was no different than the doors not unlocking due to a dead 12V battery. You blame the battery, not the door locks. In your case, blame the bad module not the brakes.

If your brake pedal fails while you are moving, press in and hold the "Park" button on the shifter stalk.

It's buried on page 190 of the current owners manual..
