I was wondering what other people have purchased for a spare tire in the aftermarket. And whether you think I should simply buy what Rivian is selling or put togerther the tire/wheel/pucks/jack on my own?

Thanks, Frank

At least in my area, there are PLENTY of OEM wheels being sold at Facebook Marketplace. I would go that route and get a full-size spare that matches your truck setup

I think it all depends on your use case that we don't necessarily know much info about. The internet collective can provide a wealth of info and endless opinions but in order for them to make any sense to your situation, we need more info.

Are you planning on off-roading? Do you want one as an "emergency only" tire? Do you want one so you can do 5-tire rotations and lengthen out your tread life? How many times in the past 20 years where you truly needed a spare tire vs. a plug repair kit to get back on the road? Are you towing long distances? Is carrying around about 150lb of spare tire and kit necessary if you're more likely to only need a tire repair kit in most instances?

Answering some these questions may help you know what's a good solution.

I live in Montana so the distance between cities can be 90+ miles. So I would need to be able to get to a place that repairs tires. It wouldn't be for offroading as I drive mainly on road and on snow in the winter without trailering anything. Dirrivn dirt roads to access river put ins and takeouts would be as rough as it gets. Knock on wood, I can't remember the last time I had to change a tire, but that's what you prepare for. Perhaps the tire repair kit in the Rivian is all I need. I do have the utility panel wth compressor.

I picked up my spare from Rivian today, and I did that mostly so I can do a 5 tire rotation. Depending on what size tire you have, an inexpensive MSW Type 52 wheel and a cheap 275/65R20 tire would do well as an inexpensive option for spare duty as long as you don't mind it not matching.

Some people have cobbled together used tires and wheels from ebay, but after searching for 3 months I just gave up and paid the piper. It's not a terrible value since it'll already be mounted and balanced, and it'll include a TPMS sensor and jack kit.

I've seen some pretty hairy tire blowouts lately that took out the entire sidewall, so a spare would be the only way to get back on the road. That said, I carried some sealant and a 12v compressor in my Model S for 5 years, though I never needed it. I haven't carried a spare in my Miata for decades.

I purchased a matching 22 Sport Dark on the sales forum and followed the DIY instructions for the rest of the kit posted here. OCD solved.

I bought a "used" but never rolled OEM wheel and tire from the Rivian for-sale subreddit.

Same here. That's why I went the cheap route. Ram 2363 wheel, used OEM tire from FB marketplace, bottle jack w/ some wood blocks for a base, and a telescoping lug wrench from Amazon.
