Died of old age during the wait
On page 19, under risk factors, they note that R1S deliveries may be later than December 2021 or not happen at all.

Granted, that doesn't mean there's an issue or anything, but there is certainly no guarantee that R1S deliveries will be starting in two months.
That is incredibly standard ass covering language. I read less than nothing into it.

It's all about the gear tunnel. Seriously. Look at the pics of the Normal plant. All the benches are shaped like the gear tunnel. It's the $80B differentiator.
Guilty as charged, the gear tunnel (camp kitchen specifically) made me put down the deposit for the R1T. Also admit that there was a part of me wanting to not rent a tuck when I have to pick up building materials too.

But, I'll probably swap over to the R1S in the end as I'll be doing more city driving than the outdoor adventures of my pre young family and large dog days. I can always rent a truck or get a Harbor Freight folding trailer for those DIY projects...

Can someone with more knowledge of the sales model comment on what the ramifications are of living in a restricted state?
I purchased my Tesla in "Ohio" instead of PA. Realistically I signed the paperwork at the Pittsburgh location that was issued by a girl in Ohio.

My ownership (both times) has been a combination of service center and mobile service, to varying degrees of satisfaction.

I am wonder where the District of Columbia fits.
"taxation without representation"

:CWL:

Seriously though, I just re-read it and it appears that DC is the list of 22 states that allows them to get a dealer license.

The subscription is likely the rivian membership that was announced recently. It includes things like cellular data, RAN charging, etc. The 5.5k lifetime revenue would be like $50/mo for ten years.

It isn’t that simple, 800V charging is going to overload or overheat most current battery pack systems or cause undue wear on them. GM is able to offer this on their Halo Hummer EV because of the sheer size of the battery pack 200KWh+ on the EV3X with WTF upgrade or Edition 1. They only offer it on the higher trims with the largest packs as it can distribute enough power across the pack while charging so as not to overload any one cell or module. All this talk about 350KW+ or 800V+ and charging EVs in 15 minutes or less is really just that, talk. Won’t be a common thing until battery tech improves some more.
I agree with everything you said, but still think it's a massive shame Rivian make 800V charging a thing (independent from a 400V battery pack and "architecture"). The Max pack will be in the range of 180kWh, so it absolutely can handle the higher sustained power rates without damage. Rivian is saying 200kW charging, but that's only going to work on chargers that support 500A. My local Petro Canada 350kW DCFC specs are 200-1000VDC and 350A Max (from the label on the side). This means only 140kW at 400V. I'm not sure what the specs are for Electrify Canada/America. 800V just means better compatibility at full charge rates. I'm happy to see the RAN plans (which we saw from leaked specs are 500A), but those will take years to fully roll out.

I'm just super disappointed because almost every single other thing about the R1T is perfect for me. I'm honestly still holding out a glimmer of hope that the $10k Max pack upgrade might include this. At any rate, with Canada deliveries pushed back again, I don't have to make a decision on my preorder for some time still.

Automobile Manufacturer Regulation in Canada
Our vehicles intended for sale in the Canadian market are subject to environmental and safety certifications administered by the appropriate Canadian regulatory authorities, including, but not limited

•
Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (“CMVSS”) administered by Transport Canada. The vast majority of CMVSS are identical or substantially similar to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (“FMVSS”) in the United States, which Rivian R1T vehicles meet as of September 2021. Certain of the differences between CMVSS and FMVSS that are applicable to our vehicles include telltales, speedometer units of measure, certain labels, immobolizer requirements for anti-theft, and pass-by noise standards. Prior to distributing any of our vehicles in Canada, Rivian will ensure that such vehicles are modified to conform with CMVSS. We expect to complete all CMVSS confirmatory testing and provide an application for certification to Transport Canada by February 2022.

As a Canadian pre-order holder and not even a LE order holder this down right sucks !
All the Canadian delivery information Rivian has been providing this far has been misleading. I had hoped they would be working on getting Canadian approvals with the US ones.

If they have no plans to obtain Canadian approvals till end of February 2022, then that means they will not start LE deliveries until then and then and then not sure how much longer for every one else.

Not to mention, where are they planning on manufacturing the Canadian vehicles ? Are they also coming from Normal or are they planning on having an manufacturing/assembly plant in BC ?

I am glad my plans for a new vehicle is not till 2022 summer/fall. Will have to wait and see if Rivian will be able to ramp Canadian productions by then.

Well, I got the SUV, and I would have thought so too. I also have a lot of CO off-roading family and they all said go with the SUV, it's better for everything.

The value of regulatory credits . . . .

While happy that we might get a chance to get in on the ground floor of the IPO as pre-order holders, I'm not keen on subscription models. $10,000 buys a whole lot of Lyft rides - that's as hands-off as it gets.
The success of the IPO & company is based on how many suckers, err..i mean customers, willing to fork over $10K of subscription fees. ;)

I just hope the Rivian employees aren't distracted by this. When your company IPO's it can be a huge distraction. I guarantee you the employees that currently own stock are also sifting through this, but obviously focusing on different parts than we are. I'm guessing all work at Rivian ground to a halt today once this was released, "Stay on Target, Stay on Targettttttt"

I got my excel booted up and started to do a DCF to see if the 80Billion valuation made any sense based upon their claimed market size...

I've been torn on their strategy for a bit. The R1T is really on brand so makes a lot of sense from that perspective to lead with it, but given American's infatuation with SUVs I would have thought they'd see more sales with the R1S and that would be a higher priority.
While the Ford MachE is sorta an SUV, as is the Model Y, the R1S looks to be able to carry a lot more. And certainly way more capable off road. It kinda has that segment all to itself. They should sell a ton of the R1S.....as long as there aren't a lot of teething problems.

I like the sound of preorder holders getting a free shot at the IPO!

Any word on the subscription amount regarding whether that's annual or expected over the life of the vehicle? Can't imagine I'll be paying $450 a month for a subscription on top of my car note.
5.5k over 10 years $45/month

My local Petro Canada 350kW DCFC specs are 200-1000VDC and 350A Max (from the label on the side). This means only 140kW at 400V.
The Rivian will charge at ~450V max (400V is the nominal figure), so closer to 160 kW.
The label might be indicating the max amperage @ 1000V and be capable of higher amperes at lower voltages.
