Did I unlock someone else’s Rivian??

Really strange situation today. I return to the Orlando airport from a two night trip. My 2022 Ram Limited eTorque with 13k miles on it is dead as a doornail. So I’m standing there waiting for the airport security to help jump my truck. A few cars down from me is a Gen 1 R1T that I walk over to check out, and as I walk up to it, the door handles slide out.

I first think that the owner must be approaching, but I look around, and there is nobody. So then I walk away and the car remains unlocked. No one showed up for 25 minutes, and I finally got jumped and drove away.

I’ve narrowed it down to one of two things:

1) I unlocked the car somehow with my iPhone key
2) The Gear Guard, Gary, knew I was a Rivian owner and unlocked the car for me to have a seat in so I didn’t have to stand on the top of the parking garage sweating to death.

I assumed it was the former, and I didn’t not cool off in the vehicle…

Maybe you have the master unlock and can unlock everyone’s Rivian? ? Did you check any other Rivians? This seems highly likely.

That would be a REALLY bizarre coincidence - owner unlocking remotely when another Rivian owner just happened to be walking up. Applying Occam's Razor (The simplest answer is the most likely answer), it would seem to me that OP's phone somehow unlocked it?!?!?!? That's a scary thought if such a bug exists. My understanding (I could be wrong) is that there is a public/private key sort of thing going on with PAAK so how could that happen?

Ii had the same scenario in a neighborhood recently. My R1S was parked a fair distance away, but the R1T near where I was walking unlocked the same time I was near that. I was very confused. I'm going to put it down to coincidence that the vehicle owner was probably unlocking it at the same time via either his fob or phone etc. No other plausible explanation that I can think of

I recall someone on here notifying Rivian to a similar security bug regarding proximity key settings. Possibly a recent update negated a previous update to fix that bug.

No superpowers here, that I’m aware of at least. If it is a bug, hopefully that can be fixed quickly! Too coincidental that this would happen twice in a pretty small sample of owners.

All that said, the worst part of it was that the R1T remained unlocked after we drove away. I had my wife take her phone and mine, and drove 100 yards away, and the doors never locked. Hopefully no valuables were in the truck.

This is literally as far from Occam’s Razor as possible.

Occam’s Razor would be the Rivian was unlocked already and OP assumed it mysteriously unlocked as he approached.

I’ve walked by many Rivians and they have never unlocked. Not saying there can’t be a bug such as this but it is not manifested in my iPhone.

Secondly, as he walked away it should have relocked once out of range if it was actually his phone that unlocked it.

Did you try the handles? Maybe they just presented, but didn't actually unlock.

I parked next to a R1S that was unlocked. When I returned 3 hrs later it was still unlocked.

I just presumed they forgot.

I can't even get my phone to unlock two Rivians that I own without going into the app and selecting the other vehicle. Didn't happen.
