So, what accounts for the difference in the quad-motor 0-60 time between Gen1 (3.0 secs) and Gen2 (2.5 secs)? Is it just software, not the new Rivian motors?
Almost 200 hp and 300 lb-ft plus much stickier summer tires widened from 275 to 305 in the rear (fronts are still 275 resulting in a staggered fitment).

With all the negativity, I want to suggest my simple answer. I believe it is possible to increase both speed and HP with the same motors that are in my R1T Launch Quad Edition. To do this in an ICE car you would certainly have to make mechanical changes and maybe slap on some racing tires. However, with DC electric motors you can increase Power by increasing Current, and the Current can be increased by making some software changes. Simply put, the Software (the brains) controls the Current allowed to the motors; the Current controls the amount of Power (with constant voltage); and Power produces the Speed and Torque. This is essentially how our accelerator pedal performs. Power = Voltage x Current. Increasing Power means increased Speed and Torque. So, I see no reason why the torque, speed, and thermal management of our Gen1 versions couldn’t be increased by a simple OTA update to our software. I remain positive.
Probably not a lot of gains to be had with the primary limitation likely being the water cooled Bosch motors used in Gen1. Rivian's in-house oil cooled Gen2 motors have much better thermal performance.

It also presets the suspension height, and probably the stability control.

If you didn't already know.

1. Sport mode
2. Lowest ride height
3. stability control reduced
4. Hard hold on brake (if not hard enough the truck will move forward and fight brakes)
5. Steering wheel straight
6. Accelerator to 100%
7. Release brake

Do all this for best launch. My assumption is launch control presets 1-3 above, then the green lights confirm 4-6 and instructs 7.

Took the words right out of my mouth,

I thought the launch mode was just a software/visual representation/confirmation of something that we could already do anyway

I dunno if there's a new IMU or something that they're using for the 0-60/telemetry stuff and not just the wheel encoders.

I can't wait for deliveries so people can see if being in that particular mode actually makes the truck take off harder, or if it's just a gimmick.

Launch mode on Gen 1 will not give a higher speed, because that is limited to tire spec's, not software. The GEN 2 vehicles with Staggered 22's will be the only ones rated to run a full 1/4 mile.. Launch mode doesn't do much for me, unless I can run the full 1/4 mile without a top end limiter.
Does that mean that Launch mode will only be available on Gen2 quads? Not on tri or DP?

RJ demonstrated Launch Mode in the Gen 2 Tri motor earlier today or yesterday.

Someone needs to put the staggered tires on a gen1, and see if that alone could get a 2.99 0-60

As hard as they make it to swap out tires/ wheel configurations as it is... I wouldn't hold your breath.
Good news! In the same interview quoted above there was a commitment to allow vehicle owners to change the tire and wheel configuration themselves without a visit to a service center for the settings change. "Coming later this year"

I think the reason is reliability. If Rivian made these OTA changes, you can bet there would be more breakage out there, probably not something they/customers would be happy with. Aftermarket maybe, OEM never gong to happen.

I did not know it was going to be staggered. I had a similar (285/305) set up on my 911.

Aren't the 22s H rated? Mine say 116H

Yes, they are, but not all 22's were rated that way from Rivian, so they default to the lowest rating for liability purposes.
